As the largest conflict in Europe since World War II enters its second month, surprising numbers of Western politicians and commentators continue to question why Ukraine does not simply accept Moscows demands. They fail to appreciate that there can be no meaningful negotiated settlement with a regime that openly denies Ukraines right to exist while actively seeking to destroy Ukrainian statehood and identity.
These calls for compromise with the Kremlin are symptomatic of a far broader perception problem. Many Europeans are still reluctant to acknowledge Russias descent into full-blown fascism under Vladimir Putin, despite similarities with Nazi Germany that are now too obvious to ignore. Indeed, German society in particular is uniquely well-equipped to recognize the ominous trajectory of Putins Russia, but seems trapped in denial.
The great irony of the current war is Russias attempt to frame the conflict as a campaign to denazify Ukraine. This portrayal is very much in line with the Kremlins long tradition of labelling any manifestations of Ukrainian national identity as fascism. It is also an attempt to tarnish Ukraines reputation on the global stage by associating the country with historys most notorious criminals.
Unfortunately for Russia, international audiences are no longer completely ignorant about Ukraine and increasingly understand that Moscows Nazi slurs are baseless. As international coverage of the current war has frequently highlighted, it is both absurd and grotesque to label a democratic country with a popularly elected Jewish president as Nazi.

That's who they think comprises the Ukraine govt & military. They think the Euromaidan Revolution was a fascist overthrow of a democratically-elected government.
The reality is a popular uprising against a corrupt puppet of a Fascist regime leading to a West-leaning Democratic Govt.
Putin likely believes it at this point, but no one knows for sure. He still wants to take Novorossiya back; he will not settle without territorial concessions.
