Health Care -- Biden budget preps for next pandemic

Biden proposes $81.7B for future pandemics

President Biden's budget proposal released Monday calls for $81.7 billion over five years to prepare for future pandemics, in what would be a major investment in boosting the country's readiness for future threats.

"While combatting the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the United States must catalyze advances in science, technology, and core capabilities to prepare the Nation for the next biological threat and strengthen U.S. and global health security," the budget states.

However, the president's budget is only a proposal, and any new funding for pandemic preparedness would require congressional approval.

Breakdown: The budget calls for $40 billion for the development and manufacturing of vaccines, treatments and tests aimed at future threats.

to prevent future pandemic. We can be sure that another republican president will slash the funding once they get into office much like Trump did right before COVID.

And since you can't predict, you can't pre-purchase.

The stuff bought for the next pandemic was trash. What might have been useful was too old to be used and the pharmaceuticals were irrelevant.

Tell me the virus for the next pandemic, and the next year, and I can tell you how to prepare. The *best* preparation for this pandemic would have been to construct and maintain some production facilities; and, not "would have been" but "was" the then-irrelevant investments in mRNA vaccine tech.

The first is inefficient and depends on future knowledge; the second also requires prescience. *That* is firmly in DARPA-land.

The rest is PR.
