Disney Vows to Seek Repeal of 'Don't Say Gay' Bill After Florida Governor Signs It Into Law

Disney has slammed the passage of the “Don’t Say Gay” bill in Florida and wants the law to be repealed after the state’s Republican governor Ron DeSantis officially signed the controversial legislation into law on Monday.

In a statement, the company said that they would like for the bill to be repealed or struck down in the courts and are working with other state organizations to achieve that goal.

“Florida’s HB 1557, also known as the ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill, should never have passed and should never have been signed into law. Our goal as a company is for this law to be repealed by the legislature or struck down in the courts, and we remain committed to supporting the national and state organizations working to achieve that. We are dedicated to standing up for the rights and safety of LGBTQ+ members of the Disney family, as well as the LGBTQ+ community in Florida and across the country,” a Walt Disney Company spokesperson said in a statement on Monday.

Disney has been in hot water for not previously taking a public stance on the “Don’t Say Gay” law, leading to company walkouts from LGBTQ+ employees over the last week.

Ron DeSantis Says Disney & Hollywood Opposition To ‘Don’t Say Gay’ Bill Is “A Badge Of Honor”

The Walt Disney Company, one of the state’s largest employers, said today through a spokesperson that the bill “should never have passed and should never have been signed into law” and committed to fighting its implementation.

DeSantis shot back at “people in Hollywood that are opposed to providing protections for parents and enforcing parents’ rights.”

He continued: “If the people who held up degenerates like Harvey Weinstein as exemplars and as heroes, if those are the types of people and all that that are opposing us on parents’ rights, I wear that like a badge of honor.”

It is unclear whether DeSantis’ Weinstein reference was specifically aimed at Disney, which purchased Miramax from Weinstein and his brother Bob in 1993 and remained in business with them until 2005, or rather a condemnation of Hollywood as a whole.

Weinstein was arrested and denounced when the truth came out.

4. So Disney will actively support candidates to replace those that voted for the Bill. Great news.

Disney will also put pressure on vendors and businesses that they have relationships with to do the same. Good for them!

Oh wait...did they actually commit to anything other than making a statement of their displeasure and hope someone else would actually follow through to do something?

6. What are these parent's rights that the repugs have started referring to?

As I see it, parents don't have rights, they have obligations. They are obligated to shelter, feed, cloth and ensure that their children get an education and are generally responsible for their children's actions. Parents have some options how they do this. But children aren't property.

Also it's interesting that one of the so called parent's rights is not the right to not become a parent.

I remember the family values crowd from the 80's and 90's. They always used this term to justify their bigotry and hate. But I don't remember them ever defining what a family value really was.
