Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsDid you watch "both" Oscar shows?
The one before the slap and the one after the slap?
Did you notice any difference in the audience after the physical assault upon the comedian, Chris Rock?
It has been said that when people show you who they are, believe them the first time.
Why did the audience change their "vibe" after Will Smith angrily slapped Chris Rock on stage?
Did they not feel comfortable with such an action? Why?
If nothing else, it showed an utter disrespect for the award winners that followed.
It was like watching two different shows. We should try to keep it in perspective.
It is an "incident" that should not be celebrated.

Her guest from the NY Times couldn't bring herself to criticize Smith, I had to turn it off. Gail also had Jim Carrey on and he was great calling out Smith's behavior, and Hollywood's behavior as completely unacceptable.
King's question to Carrey, Did you see the escalation between Rock and Smith?
Carrey, What escalation, it was an attack.
Disgraceful, the way Hollywood protects Smith is the same as Republicans defending Trump.

I love Jim Carrey.
And then Gayle tried to excuse it "it escalated to that" to which Jim raised his voice and said IT DIDNT ESCALATE

(165 posts)So here we are with a sizable portion of our population defending and applauding a violent attack over a joke. Possibly a joke in bad taste, possibly even a mean-spirited jab with a history behind it, but still a joke. Many people saying "I would have done the same thing. Will thought he and his wife were disrespected and it made Jada sad." Really? Thinking you were disrespected makes violence ok? The nazis in Charlottesville were "sure" they were being replaced and their lives would be forever changed. The J6 seditionists were "sure" their election and their country as they knew it were stolen from them. Mistaken and misguided but those were their thoughts. These ideas to them are certainly much more important than a "disrespectful" joke at an awards show. The nazis and the seditionists chose violence to express themselves. They were wrong. Violence in response to a joke is ridiculous. It is wrong. Period.

(12,209 posts)Will Smith showed his abusive tendencies.... committed the act, then later cries, rationalizes the behavior, blames the other validating the poor choice to assault...askes for forgiveness...It is a predictable pattern...Viewers are left with feeling like a victim as well...
That is what everyone felt....Like taking the oxygen out of a room...
Let us not forget...Chris Rock was doing his job, he was " on the job"...assaulted on the job.

IMO this was 99% about a joke from earlier in the show directed at the Smiths and making light of their open relationship which I think Will struggles with a lot. His pride was hurt, he felt emasculated, so when this rather innocuous joke was said he acted. The entire way he behaved after while accepting his award made clear this was about Will's feelings and "manhood".
Their open relationship is joked about endlessly in Hollywood, Will has been called a Cuck. Society doesn't accept non conventional marriage situations very readily, and it certainly seems that their relationship status being open is more Jada's demand than Will's preference.
When he accepted his award, he reminded me of a grade school kid who was being bullied who finally couldn't control himself and attacked someone, he was struggling to make excuses for his loss of control, he was emotionally overcome with feelings he didn't understand and couldn't control.
Toxic Masculinity elicits violence when someone's "manhood" is challenged, I believe that's what we saw here, Will Smith's fragile ego was hurt by the joke about his open relationship, so the Chris Rock joke set him off. Toxic Masculinity made Smith think he had the right to commit violence and then make excuses for it. Toxic masculinity dictates that Will thinks he has the right to tell others what they can and cannot say, and who they say it about. Will Smith has no right to demand Chris Rock not speak about his wife, who does he think he is? Putin?
