That is what the Republican Party is doing today. There is no way for them to explain a 7 1/2 hour gap in Trump's call logs on January 6th. There is no way for many of them to explain their actions leading up to the attack upon our Capitol. It is extremely embarrassing for them. And for some of them, it could be extremely politically damaging for them.
The truth is so awful that the Republican Party has no choice but to cover it up. Otherwise, it would be like cutting off their noses to spite their face.
That is why there can be no full "bi-partisan" investigation. There are simply not enough Republicans, that are not damaged or embarrassed, to get the job done. They would prefer to sweep it under the rug, cover it up, and forget it ever happened.
That is the reality we must deal with.
And if they win in the midterm they will be able to cover it up even more.

(7,788 posts)want the world's #1 perceived democracy knee-capped by deep, pernicious, exposed scandal, greed, corruption carried out over the last several elections. Not necessarily because they are part of the planning and implementation but because the truth would be so damaging that the US would be diminished as a super power and positive influencer of world events.
Democracy, justice, and capitalism have been so easily corrupted by people of bad faith...not the best message going forward.
I believe the GOP could disappear entirely if fully exposed...faith in institutions more reduced from even our low point...and if you're the world's only current super power upsetting the apple cart leads to global uncertainty.
I imagine there's a lot of reluctance, even on the part of well-meaning officials, to go down that path.

The absolute rage I feel about this inserts words and emotions that are best not put into print.

(1,000 posts)Who actually is really, really unaware? Our NATO allies? They had to keep a straight face and deal with that inept clown. Our competitors? (China) Always planning deep into the future, they smiled upon their good fortune. Russia? They manipulated and encouraged their "partner" in our division, humiliation, and decent into madness.
So Mitch, Kevin, and company made the big power grab...behind the Emperor with no clothes. And now it is "nothing to see here, please make it go away." And all the nutters deeply concerned with "meh freedoms" so eager to take others freedoms are still doing battle for their bullshit culture wars. Call "don't say gay" what it is, "back in the closet or die, right to bully" bill.......for Kindergarten to third grade for God's sake. Torment and terrorize kids who don't even know what the adults are going nuts about.

Remind me again, wasn't he a back bench Congressman of no particular skill before he went to work for the guy who hires the best people, like Mark Meadows, another back bencher of no particular skill? (42,676 posts)but sometimes fiction nails it pretty close. Robert Ludlum's Apocalypse Watch is a great book where terrorists worldwide align amid corruption and alliance with our political system. They catch the crooks, it's a novel of course, but most just walk away because it's too hot to handle. It was supposed to be made into a movie, but got axed supposedly by budgets during the Great Recession. Now they couldn't make it I don't think, it would be too much of a hot potato.

(7,828 posts)I do not want to hear about whispered dissent among those Republican members who dare not oppose GOP leadership publicly.
All of them OWN this. Every House and Senate member who voted to refuse the reported election results, every one who voted not to impeach, every single one who stayed silent over this and other reports worthy of outrage.
They have acted as accomplices to TFG and the grand GOP scheme to overturn the rule of law and the Constitution in order to cement control of our government permanently in Republican hands.
All hail the Neo-Fascist Theocracy and its wholly illegal and inhumane dogma.

(5,468 posts)the January 6th Commission has testimony about some of the people that tRump called. Subpoena their phone records from the missing time period and you have the number that he was calling from.
We know from past testimony that he had a habit of 'borrowing' staffer's phones when he didn't want to use his official one, or he may have used a 'burner'.

(51,432 posts)won't be able to deny that this is tRump's Watergate moment. Everyone knows all about Watergate and Nixon being a crook. This is the validation that was needed to finally convince some who have been on the fence to wake up and see who their dear leader is. Not only are they going to have to come to grips that tRump loves Putin and Putin loves tRump to this day. The majority of Americans hate Putin and therefore must also hate tRump. Yeah!!! Bring on the midterms and the Dems just have to say over and over that those two cretins are BFFS still. And no one loves Nixon, except for Manafort and Stone. I hope the Dems remember this in the media. They need to get ready NOW and not wait 6 months.

You cannot shame them, they are shameless, but you can repeat the story over and over, create memes to make sure you can change many minds along the way. It requires a very aggressive campaign, repeat, repeat...
