https://www.upi.com/Health_News/2022/03/28/prediabetes-adolescents-teens-study/9471648232234/This includes just over 40% of young people who are obese, the data showed.
In addition, those age 12 to 19 years who live in poverty are more likely to have prediabetes, the prevalence of which in this age group more than doubled since 1999, researchers said.
Between 2015 and 2018, the last period included in the analysis, 28% of adolescents and teens had prediabetes, up from 12% between 1999 and 2002, according to the researchers.
Holy hell. That's a shocking number, and the study period ended in 2018, before the pandemic hit. It's easily over 30% now, IMO.
As someone who had gym every day in school and grew up working on a farm, the fact that my 11 yr old daughter only has gym 45 minutes every other day worries me.

(17,857 posts)I was shocked how much my blood sugar dropped when I went on a keto diet, and it wasn't like I was consuming a lot of carbs even before then.
Make sure teens have access to high quality vegetables and protein. Getting them to eat it is another thing though.

(17,857 posts)I know I am spending more on my groceries since going to keto. Given what my wife pays for her diabetes medications it is still cheap, but I have financial options that poor people on food stamps do not have.

(9,631 posts)I would guess 85% of what food pantries give away are carbs
The Catholic Church that runs a local food pantry also raises a huge garden so they can supplement the carbs with fresh veggies 🥕
I eat low carb nowadays. Strict keto to lose, then just general low carb for maintenance. Once you get started, it's easy to maintain the habit. Splenda for anything I used to use sugar for, keto bread from costco, and then just nuts, fiber noodles, etc. I eat a lot of chicken and vegetables anyway. I just stopped with things like rice, potatoes, and flour. I made almond flour waffles for breakfast yesterday.
My partner is on and off pre-diabetic due to his genetics - he exercises and eats decently, but a lot of people in his family have it. Whenever he goes through periods of eating like me, his tests show the blood levels go entirely back to normal range. But then he goes back to carbs and they rise.
He has testing pokey thingies I sometimes use out of curiosity once every few months. I always test around 90.

(5,188 posts)one of the worst foods a diabetic can eat. Just wanted to make you aware of the noodle thing. If everyone ate lowish carb we would be a country of healthy, fairly thin people. But one does need enough carbs to run one's brain so don't go overboard. Keep at it. You will do just great.

(8,928 posts)They're made from soybean fiber, so they have no carbs. They have the taste and consistency of fettucine. A bit pricey at $14 for six servings, buy I buy them and make pasta for dinner maybe once a week. Usually with a chicken and mushroom sauce. So good!

(7,070 posts)The Standard American Diet (SAD) is extremely high in sugar and carbs. So we develop insulin resistance. Then T2 Diabetes. Just drastically cut sugar and carbs. That's all it takes.

(3,557 posts)I try to educate them that consuming a lot of sugar could lead to diabetes later in life and, when they are at my place, I curb a lot of the sugar intake. However, I dont know what they eat when they are at their moms place.
Theyre grandfather (my father) has to check his blood sugar levels throughout the day and inject insulin as a result of a lifetime of a poor diet. I hope that scares them into making smarter decisions.

(19,110 posts)My wife has weight issues that she attributes in part to her early experience with Coke. Her mom gave it to her as a toddler, and for 20 years she was drinking a 2-liter a DAY! She's since quit cold turkey.
So when Grandma tried that same crap with our daughter as a toddler, we stopped that crap in it's tracks. And despite all the weight issues my wife had, her mom still tried to guilt trip us about "withholding" soda 🤷
Since she never developed a taste for it, she only drinks milk and water as a middle schooler, and she's a healthy weight.
