EXPLAINER: What is law critics have dubbed 'Don't Say Gay'?

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida has come under intense national scrutiny over legislation that critics have labeled the “Don’t Say Gay” law.

The GOP legislation, which Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis signed into law Monday, bars instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity in kindergarten through the third grade. Republicans argue that parents should broach these subjects with children. Democrats have said the law demonizes LGBTQ people by excluding them from classroom lessons.

WHAT DOES THE LAW DO?

The law’s central language reads: “Classroom instruction by school personnel or third parties on sexual orientation or gender identity may not occur in kindergarten through grade 3 or in a manner that is not age appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards.”

Parents would be able to sue districts over violations.

In fact, apparently every person in Florida will have a personal standard which, if violated, will allow that person to sue the school for ten large. Will it be chaotic? You betcha! Will it invite the kind of frivolous lawsuits that Republicans used to complain about when big judgments were returned against their fatcat bankrollers? Uh huh. Will school districts spend large portions of their budget trying and failing to avoid lawsuits? Yeparoonie! Will it inflict all kinds of untold damage on schools, parents, districts and particularly vulnerable students? You make that sound like a bad thing. Will it be ruled unconstitutional? Perhaps eventually, but until then . . .

The Biden administration is not going to let DeathSantis mistreat vulnerable young people

Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona said yesterday that his department is monitoring the state of Florida for possible federal civil rights violations, just after Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) signed the state's "Don't Say Gay" bill into law.

That’s what the bill says when I read it. The same goes for married teachers like Mrs. Smith.

So little Sam could get the teacher sued just for asking, “why do I have a mommy and daddy, while Taylor has two mommies, and Pat has two Daddies?”

Screwed up for sure. Just let people be people and get Government out of regulating people and back to regulating corporations where real problems are.

Because kids are observant. They will see that another child's family is different. And they will ask. How can any teacher answer that question without offending some "religious" sensibility?

How much longer can a typical teacher withstand this attack directed at them? I imagine that there will be a net outflow of teachers from Floriduh this next school year. This law really is the exact opposite of what we should do since our current children are our future. The more we invest in our children, the better our future is.

Does the law apply to private schools? I doubt it.
