Might as well call it Chip or some other silly nickname.

(154,021 posts)look on the bright side, every bad storm, like Katrina, and now Sandy. the name is retired
It is better than storm 1-34, like it used to be.

(12,233 posts)cousin's girlfriends have called her Sandy, for some reason... Needless to say, not too many of the g.f.'s have met out qualifications for deserving of him. But that has nothing to do with the storm name..

(14,858 posts)Names get retired if a storm is big and bad enough to get famous, but other than that the names are recycled. I believe they started this about the same time they started naming tropical storms as well as hurricanes, but I may be wrong about the timing. I thought it was stupid to start naming tropical storms, but reusing names for nothing storms is all right. Eventually they were going to run out of names if they didn't start rotating them.
Edited for clarity.

Beryl? Really? Debby is as bad as Sandy. And Chris is weird for me since it is my husband's name and brother's name. My aunt is Christine and my daughter is Christa.
I hope we do not encounter Tony, Valerie or William.
