(29,199 posts)is going to this refugee center for Ukraine orphans
And, because I once was a Chief Scientist for NASA, I am sending the first kid, Sasha, a NASA T-shirt and gifts for all of the children. She will find out what each child wants / needs and if I can afford it, she will give to them. This is the third such trip she has made to Ukraine refugee camps in Romania... each time she brings blankets and stuffed animals... and money.
I see that Omaha Steve has reduced the goal for this fundraiser
https://unitedhelpukraine.org/donate
I have donated to this once... and I wish to tell DU... in light of the ongoing crises.... he is $3500 from his goal of $10,000.
So... I will match any gift made up to a total of $1800 to help DU meet the goal. Omaha_Steve will simply tell me how much is donated... and I will match it.
I am not rich... this will come from my retirement fund. But some things are just worth it.
Lets get this over $10K... it will be a drop in the bucket for what the 4 million refugees need. but every drop helps.

(29,199 posts)The orphanage would not let her see any children, denied having the first kid named Sasha (wants to be an American and an astronaut). We left a NASA t-shirt anyway, along with many coloring books, toys, few stuffed animals.
And $150 EU for the staff.
The staff said "thank you" and that was it. None of the Ukrainian teachers came to the reception area... and they were almost rude to my friend. This is the third trip she has made on my behalf to Romanian refugee centers... in the other two (not orphanages but tent city refugee places) they gladly took our donation of stuffed animals and blankets... and, of course, Euros.
She will go back to this place again... one last time... to try to break the ice.
They were surprised that anyone from Bucharest would drive to the orphanage (about 70km).
We are both a bit disappointed.
She sent me a photo of a notice they had posted... no cameras, no admittance. "No press!!!" which I thought was odd given that the CNN reporter was inside with a photographer and translator... and gave the children's full names and ages in the report.
