The only thing that's keeping them in thrall to Putin is the perception that he's powerful and his constant Christian posery. Note how perversely the Russian Orthodox Church is sanctifying his invasion of Ukraine and his military doctrine of murdering Ukrainians. The whole lot of them worship raw power and call it "Jesus".

Trump is sick in the head. He doesn't have a clue that his siding with Putin is politically and morally wrong. He's crafty enough to not say it out loud, but he's lacking in the normal human situational awareness that it would take to actually hide his affinities.
