Ukraines U.N. Ambassador Sergiy Kyslytsya told the U.N. Security Council on Tuesday that the demilitarization of Russia is well underway.
Since the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine, Kyslytsya said the Russian occupiers have lost more than 17,000 military personnel, over 1,700 armored vehicles and almost 600 tanks.
He also said Russia has lost 300 artillery systems, 127 planes and 129 helicopters, almost 100 rocket launchers systems, 54 air defense systems and seven ships.
Earlier on Tuesday, Russia announced it will significantly scale back military operations near Ukraines capital and a northern city ...

(3,001 posts)The largest unit I have seen mentioned on the Ukrainian side has been battalion level and what you see in videos being released are platoon and smaller maneuver elements. I am sure they are being effective, if only because as soon as the RU troops meet resistance they seem to run or dig in rather than call in artillery and air support and other support and continue to push forward but the numbers of destroyed RU vehicles/aircraft being put out just seem large for the scale of the direct combat action.

(51,129 posts)Ukraine decides to keep fighting until they have all their territory cleansed of invaders. The human toll is unthinkable, not defending your nation is also.
There is an incredible asymmetry in present day warfare, a little unmanned drone will destroy a tank costing millions of dollars just to produce, a relatively cheap missile takes down a $30 million dollar fighter jet or a bomber costing the plane, the pilot, and the loss of millions of dollars just to train the people. The invader is at a huge disadvantage because the effort is unsustainable in the long run if the defender can holdout. Of course, there is another factor to weigh, the cost of rebuilding a nation which has been leveled to the ground.

It can easily take out a trained aviator or other complex vehicle operator - millions of dollars worth of training and equipment lost.

(22,100 posts)their killing shots now, and don't let the Russians get away. Make them pay for every inch that the Russians dirtied w/ their soldiers, their military equipment, the people that they killed to satisfy putin's orgasmic urgings to become a 'world leader' of undisputed repute.
Ha ha heh. This got all blown up to hell, didn't it?
Well, at least maybe one nice thing about this sorry episode, that since their military equipment etc. seems all downtrodden and pathetic, not maintained, etc., that perhaps their missiles (an even more sensitive piece of equipment) have failed even more spectacularly.

(14,489 posts)Similar to Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan these days. They can also sell recovered usable parts back to Russia at a huge premium after they take what they need for themselves.
I'M all for converting repaired Russian tanks and other vehicles into farm machinery to help the nation rebound.

(14,697 posts)Russia doesn't seem to care about the numbers as long as they appear to win.
Russia has ~900,000 troops in its military; about 300k in the army.
Obviously those are spread out and not all fighters.
They committed about 150k troops to the invasion. About 10% of those are dead. Another 20% are wounded or captured/awol.
But Russia doesn't seem to care. They are moving the remaing pieces around, but aren't pulling out. They are hiring merc's and calling in third countries to help.
They show every sign of escalating.
And they still have chemical/bio agents and nukes to put on the table.
Brave talk. Maybe even accurate. But meaningless.
