Fascism will be welcomed and applauded by media institutions as long as its profitable, helps with ratings, and grants them access to power. As I predicted last year, Trump and his merry gang of traitorous accomplices are all going to fail up. So far, none of them are in jail or even indicted, despite demonstrable evidence they conspired in a coup to overturn a free and fair election. This town always protects its own. Its an incestuous ecosystem, a revolving door between politics, media, and big money, where theyre partisan in front of the cameras and in the halls of Congress. However, behind the scenes, theyre wining and dining together and horizontal between sheets after the occasional key bump of cocaine.
Theres no cancel culture for conservatives even if they voluntarily enabled the most corrupt and disastrous presidency of our lifetime. In fact, we have a permanent affirmative action policy for them, with the bar being lowered every year. If youre a Republican, you just need a pulse to succeed. The latest example is CBS News hiring the former Trump White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney as a network contributor. He told reporters to get over it when they inquired about Trumps attempt at a quid pro quo with Ukraine. This is the same Mulvaney who said coronavirus concerns during the start of the pandemic were part of the medias hoax of the day. Back then, the CBS building in New York City was evacuated, and employees died from the coronavirus. Now, Mulvaney gets to enter that very same building with a pass.
Obviously, this is the most qualified and deserving person to get a rare and lucrative TV commentator job. Surely, there are no other people out there who can offer valuable insights and analysis of the current political crises of the day. The medias harmful and nauseating both sides analysis and framing, especially as one of the two political parties supports the violent insurrectionists as ordinary citizens, deserves someone like Mulvaney. The controversial hiring might make you assume mainstream media institutions are suffering from permanent Stockholm syndrome. After all, several White House press reporters held a going away party for Sarah Huckabee Sanders even after she spent her tenure as White House press secretary actively lying to their faces and mocking them on behalf of a man who actively threatens journalists. I saw Sean Spicer, who previously held the same job, having the greatest time of his life at a private party held for reporters and journalists a day before the annual White House Press Correspondents Dinner a few years ago. He was rewarded for his lies and disinformation with a 2017 Emmys appearance and a lucrative, six-figure contract to appear on Dancing With The Stars. Disgraced former mayor Rudy Giuliani cant go a month without making a fool out of himself or failing at coup attempts, but he still was paid by Fox to appear on The Masked Singer. Chris Christie, who proudly supported Trumps presidency after he promoted hateful racist policies, was rewarded with a cushy ABC News gig. Bill Barr, Trumps compromised attorney general, had his complicity laundered by mainstream media institutions who helped make his book a bestseller. Not to be outdone, Kellyanne Conway, who lies with such skill that its hard not to admire her shameless, sordid craft, was paid millions of dollars by a major publisher to write her tell-all.
All of these individuals helped Trump attack our institutions, our democracy, our ethics, our marginalized communities, and cheered on as he used fascist language to deride the free press and media organizations as the enemy of the people. Naturally, those same institutions now turn around and reward them. Im reminded of the infamous Michael Jordan quote: Republicans buy sneakers, too. At the end of the day, the north star for most media outlets is not exposing the truth, laying out the facts, informing the public, holding power accountable, or protecting democracy which is under daily assault both here and abroad. Its a corporate system that sadly first and foremost cares about money, ratings, and access. Thats the north star. Anyone who works in my industry who tells you otherwise is either flat-out lying or woefully naive. This doesnt mean people dont care or arent trying. Many journalists remain principled, dogged, and hard-working in their fight to preserve democracy and the reputation of the fourth estate. But they remain in the minority.

When two hedge fund firms effectively own most of the MSM, I find it difficult to believe these corporations and their shareholders don't influence editorial decisions.
