(CNN)Kentucky lawmakers on Tuesday gave final approval to a sweeping abortion bill that would ban most abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy, restrict access to medication abortion and make it more difficult for a minor to obtain an abortion in the state.
The state's Republican-controlled House on Tuesday passed House Bill 3 in a 74-19 vote. The GOP-led Senate earlier Tuesday had voted 29 to 0 to pass the legislation and had amended the bill to include a 15-week ban, with Republicans and only one Democrat voting in support of the measure. The 72-page legislation now heads to the desk of Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear, who has not committed to supporting any of the abortion bills working their way through the state legislature. Were he to veto, the legislature would likely override him.
Earlier this month, Beshear told reporters of the bills: "We'll review each of them." In response to a question about abortion bills that were pending in mid-March, the governor also said that he believes "health care decisions should be between a patient and their doctor."

(19,066 posts)For most of my life I believed that this was the red line for women, that if this right came under attack there would be social upheaval. In Texas, abortion has been banned for all but those who can afford to travel out of state, and it's barely a blip anymore.
I don't get it.

(5,499 posts)Until that is published the state legislatures are just posturing. But if Stella and The Boys overturn Roe, I think you'll see the real outrage. State legislatures have been pulling this bullshit for years but it has gone nowhere.

(19,066 posts)And these laws are in effect right now, the SCOTUS hasn't halted them until they rule.
I don't think some people appreciate how the right to choose has given women in our country the chance to make their own lives and control their own destinies. Losing that right dooms millions of women to poverty, to being under the control of their child's father for years. It sentences women to servitude in some ways. It's also horrible for unwanted children and for society as a whole.
