Two of the Russian planes that violated Swedish airspace near Gotland on March 2 were equipped with nuclear weapons, TV4 Nyheterna reports. According to information received by the channel, the violation was a deliberate act with the aim of intimidating Sweden.
It was on March 2 that the unusual formation took off from the Russian air base Kaliningrad. Four planes - two Sukhoi 24 type attack planes were escorted by two Sukhoi 27 type fighter planes. The two attack planes were, according to TV4 Nyheter sources, equipped with nuclear weapobs, which the Russian pilots made clear. Due to the conflict in Ukraine, the Swedish Air Force had increased preparedness and could see early on that the Russian pilots were heading for Gotland.
The Armed Forces does not want to comment
The Armed Forces does not want to comment on whether the two attack planes were equipped with nuclear weapons. On the other hand, it is clear that the violation itself must have been deliberate.
- We assess it as a conscious action. Which is very serious especially as they are a warring country, said Air Force Chief Carl-Johan Edström.
Could the planes have been incorrectly navigated?
- We have analysed the incident and it is clear that I can not rule out incorrect navigation, but everything indicates that it was a deliberate act. That they violated Sweden's borders, said Edström.
The violation of Swedish territory lasted for about a minute. The air force deployed two JAS 39 Gripen that could meet away and take pictures of the intruders. That was when it was confirmed that the Russian planes were equipped with nuclear weapons. External observers see the incident as an expression of a clear strategy on the part of Russia.
This is a signal to Sweden that they have nuclear weapons and they could also consider using them, said Stefan Ring, military strategic expert.

wouldn't you need bombers rather than fighters?

(7,538 posts)12. Two were...two fighters (Su-27s) and two attack bombers (Su-24s)
Both are quite old models, the Su-24 introduced in 1975 and the Su-27 in 1985.

Similar in looks/mission to a F-111
