Maybe people really are calling.
All that said, I will be anything all the complaints in the world won't amount to jack shit.

(14,624 posts)I think if they get enough complaints, they will rethink Mulvaney.
If CBS really feels they need a repube point of view, there are many Rs who didn't work for the ShitHole Administration. How hard is it to find one?

(14,574 posts)Small thing, maybe, but a way to fight back. News per se should be considered a public good and held sacrosanct from ratings and sharehold profits.
We really need a new Fairness Doctrine.

(15,543 posts)It's an outrage. CBS is totally prostituting itself. They need to hear about it, and they need to be shunned.

(8,820 posts)I believe a statistic that I heard, that 80+% of all media in the U.S. is owned and/or operated by wealthy Republicans.
It isn't just Fox or RW media. It's all media, including the major network TV stations..........NBC is probably the most notable....
This corporate news bias has been obvious for DECADES.
It can be as subtle as showing a great portrait picture of the Republican, and right next to it, a crappy picture of the Democrat.
One media picture of Obama, actually took a file picture and darkened Obama's skin, make him appear much darker.......
Foreign journalists have told me many other techniques that the media uses to subconsciously slant the story, article or commentary.

(11,738 posts)When "access" is the coin of the realm, this is what happens. Especially when one of the major political parties wills it to be that way and controls a lot of the funding.
One of the things Chris Wallace said when talking to Stephen Colbert recently was that part of the problem with today's "press" is when it stopped being considered as a "public good" and started to be seen as a money making enterprise.
There has always been a problem with the press, bias, and power, but it seems that we are moving more and more from the idea of the Press holding the powerful accountable, to the Press acting as a publicist for the powerful

(14,176 posts)or even that they believe repubs will take over one chamber of congress after the elections--that's DC conventional wisdom. It's that when Mulvaney appeared on CBS, he was identified as a former Office of Management and Budget director" rather than a repub or the OMB director for the twice impeached one term failure. I'd even settle for them calling him a founding member of the freedom caucus, but to put him on air as if he's a neutral observer is unforgivable.

(82,849 posts)CBS wants to be sure their precious views aren't lost just because they're in the minority. And if Republicans really get creamed in November, there will be even more Republicans looking for a job, and so CBS will have to hire more of them.

(3,190 posts)So they hire a Republican as a commentator because that person has access to other Republicans and is therefore able to provide commentary and inside speculation on the political news of the day. That seems... completely reasonable, actually.
I think their selection of Mulvaney is certainly questionable, as there have got to be better options in terms of former members of 45's administration. Allowing him to use this gig to rehabilitate his image is certainly objectionable, as well. Mulvaney was and is a trog.
That said, the outrage and righteous indignation about this is a little silly, honestly. I highly doubt anyone around here would be in high dudgeon about this if Mulvaney had been a member of a Democratic administration.

(3,190 posts)CBS projecting that the GOP will take control of one, if not both, houses of Congress shouldn't be shocking. Pundits have been making that exact prediction for quite some time now, and historically the President's party loses seats in midterm elections, particularly in his first term. Given the thin margins in both houses, it's reasonable to conclude that both are in play for the GOP.
Nor should it be shocking that they're hiring a commentator to give them a window into the inner workings of that party. Like I said, though, they certainly could have made a better choice than Mulvaney. CBS is making a move that they believe will benefit their journalism and, since news is a business like anything else, their bottom line.
As for their supposed corruption, different media bias analyses show CBS to be center-left, depending on which one you're looking at. I don't know of any that show them having a bias towards the right, but if you can find one, I'd certainly take a look at it. So if they are indeed corrupt, they're corrupt in our favor.
Tell me true: if this same exact event took place but with the parties reversed and they'd selected Denis McDonough for the same reasons, do you think anyone here on DU would be all worked up about it? If you can say "yes" to that question while maintaining a straight face, Hollywood is where you should be. DU would be lauding the choice, if it were discussed at all.
As for my true colors, yes, I revealed myself as someone who considers the facts and engages in reasoned analysis of same. How awful...

(90,686 posts)Come on, CBS News. Dont legitimize Mick Mulvaney
Giving the former Trump official a paid contributor gig is an act of journalistic malpractice.
BY KURT BARDELLA
From mid-December 2018 through early March 2020, Mick Mulvaney, a former member of Congress from South Carolina, served as President Trumps acting chief of staff.
On Mulvaneys watch, the White House took a wrecking ball to checks and balances by vowing to defy all congressional subpoenas.
On Mulvaneys watch, the Trump administration launched an unconstitutional attack against the process to conduct a fair census.
On Mulvaneys watch, at least 25 administration officials received security clearances that should not have been granted based on the recommendations of intelligence officials.
On Mulvaneys watch, Trump ignored numerous warnings from health experts about the severity of the coronavirus. More than 970,000 Americans have died from COVID-19 since the pandemic began.
And yet, in spite of this record, CBS News made the decision to reward Mulvaney with a gig as a paid contributor. Id expect this move from a Trump-aligned propaganda medium like Fox News. But from CBS News? Give me a break.
Its as if the powers-that-be at the network learned nothing from a tumultuous presidency that culminated with insurrectionists attacking the U.S. Capitol. The very people who rode shotgun in the effort to dismantle democracy are being rewarded with book deals, guest-host roles on TV shows and more. Lets be clear: Democracy doesnt die in darkness, it dies because of stuff like this.
