I posted the following OP yesterday, and said that I would get back to people with what I found out, if anything, about the 2nd Covid booster.

I just got home now after getting the second Pfizer Covid booster.
After I heard yesterday that people over 50 were now eligible for this booster, I went online, landed on the website for my county health department, and registered for for the second booster. They offered several locations to get the booster, and I chose a local church because they had appointments today, and I thought there would be few people there because they stated they were letting people in only one person at a time, and that you must be masked. That didn't work out so well. When I drove up to the church, there was a line of about 30 people outside, all unmasked, waiting for the door to open. My appointment was at 4:30. Turns out the church was sponsoring a free dinner at 4:30 as well. Not only that, but the dinner was in the same room that the health department was giving the vaccines. I masked up and went and stood in line. I thought all of those people were there for a vaccine, and didn't know about the dinner until I got inside.
This is unrelated, but I thought it was pretty funny: As I was standing in line, 5 different people, who did not appear to be in the same group, came up to me and said one of these two things: 1) Hi Chris, or 2) Hey, you look just like Chris! My name is not Chris, and now I'm wondering who the fuck Chris is. To the people who told me I looked just like Chris, I just said thank you.
Alright, so here's some info:
1) Walked up to the table that was staffed by two health department employees. I said "I'm here for the second Pfizer booster, and I want to verify that you are aware of that". The woman said "Oh no, we are not set up here for the second booster. The FDA approved it, but we have not been informed anything about CDC approval. We are here for people getting the first booster. My response was as follows: Listen, I went through a rigorous 30 minute online registration process last night. I was specifically asked if I received the first booster already. I answered yes. I was then asked the date of the my first booster, and I replied to the online form (my date was just over 6 months ago). I was informed that my registration was approved, and I have a ticket for it. She then asked me if I was immunocompromised, and I told her yes. She said: Let me make a phone call. She made a call, came back to me, and said: You're fine, you can get the booster. She gave me the booster, had me wait for 15 minutes, and I left.
MY CONCLUSION: Since approval for people over 50 was just yesterday approved by the FDA, it's probably going to be difficult to find a place giving the 2nd booster, unless you are immunocompromised. It might be a different story in a day or so, but that was my experience today. I was not asked in what way I was immunocompromised.
2) There were some questions concerning cost of the second booster. I think there were some comments that insurance was not covering the 2nd booster, etc. All I know about this is that I was not charged anything, and they were aware that this was my 2nd booster. I am in New York State.
3) The woman told me that the 2nd Pfizer booster, which I received, is the full dose, and that the Moderna 2nd booster will be the reduced dose like the 1st booster was.
4) It's only been about 1.5 hours since I get the shot, and I'm feeling fine. But based on previous experience from the first three shots that I had, I'm going to start getting a strong reaction almost exactly 12 hours after the shot.
That's all I have, hope it answers some questions.

(13,488 posts)and am waiting until next week to explore whether to get it. (I'm in relatively good health, but I have Asthma and thrombophilia (potential for blood clotting), so I kind of think I should do it....?)
Anyhow, I thought i'd give it a few days. I've had three moderna doses so far. Want to try for pfizer, so need to figure out where to go for that one.

(17,425 posts)I think that waiting is not a bad decision, it's up to each individual depending on their perceived risk level, etc.
Nothing wrong with giving it some thought.

(17,425 posts)To further elaborate on the the people in line, I'm assuming that most of them were homeless based on the conversations that I heard. Also, my wife works in the mental health services field, and she told me that the area in which the church is located has a particularly high concentration of people with various mental health problems and cognitive impairments.
So I kind of understood that probably a lot of these people are just trying to get through life, and the thought of Covid is not one of their top priorities, so I didn't get upset about people in line being unmasked.
That being said, when I see unmasked people in Wegmans, which is a higher end grocery store, I have to fight off the urge to lose my shit, because pretty much nobody in that store has a mask on.
Good luck with your booster!

(30,613 posts)(Well, only one these days, as will become clear). One, in the tonier part of the county is almost entirely masked. The other, in an area nearer to the rural part of the county, is almost entirely unmasked.

I laughed and said "You didn't give me that shot, did you. Fess up".
She laughed and said "Do you know how many injections I've given? I could do it in my sleep".

(17,425 posts)I said I'd get back to you...
Almost identical to the reactions I had for the first three shots. Nagging headache. Entire body aches, extreme fatigue, arm hurts worse than everything else that hurts lol. Also, I have nausea this time around. I don't feel feverish at all, so I haven't taken my temperature.
Symptoms didn't start until 15 hours after the shot, where for the previous three shots, it was almost 12 hours on the nose.
Based on my previous experience, I'll start feeling better by tomorrow night (Friday). Have an eye doctor appointment first thing tomorrow morning though, so I'm anticipating a bit of a struggle with that.
How are you doing? I hope you are feeling good.
Have a nice day!

(10,877 posts)That does not sound fun.
Its so weird how I have no issues at all. Like I said, I wish I had something wrong because then it would be proof I got the vaccine.
I hope it doesnt get worse. At least you know youre vaccinated And are you gonna be safer because of it.
Thank you for the update!

(17,425 posts)even though I feel sick, I know I'm not sick, and it's just an immune system reaction that will be gone in 36 hours or so.
Also, don't worry about not getting a reaction. Some people just don't get them! But rest assured, the vaccine is doing what it should be doing for you.

(17,425 posts)asks if you have a condition causing a weakened immune system, i answer no, then it says
"Due to current CDC guidance, only specific groups are currently eligible for a COVID-19 vaccination booster shot."
shouldn't matter. over 50 are eligible.
LuckyCharms
(17,425 posts)giving CDC approval the priority over the FDA approval. FDA has approved for people over 50, but the CDC hasn't yet.
It's all very confusing to me.

https://www.cdc.gov/media/releases/2022/s0328-covid-19-boosters.html
Following FDAs regulatory actionexternal icon today, CDC is updating its recommendations to allow certain immunocompromised individuals and people over the age of 50 who received an initial booster dose at least 4 months ago to be eligible for another mRNA booster to increase their protection against severe disease from COVID-19. Separately and in addition, based on newly published data, adults who received a primary vaccine and booster dose of Johnson & Johnsons Janssen COVID-19 vaccine at least 4 months ago may now receive a second booster dose using an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine.
These updated recommendations acknowledge the increased risk of severe disease in certain populations including those who are elderly or over the age of 50 with multiple underlying conditions, along with the currently available data on vaccine and booster effectiveness.

(1,797 posts)The first shot I had no symptoms.
The second shot I started having flu symptoms that evening - I'd gone for an 11 mile run right after the shot and not sure if that had anything to do with it. ?
The third shot I got in tandem with the flu shot, one in each arm - I had flu symptoms that evening (as I had with the 2nd shot), the next day started having swollen lymph nodes in the arm that had the booster shot to the point where I couldn't fold my arm down at the side, and was sick for three days and tired for two days after that.
A little nervous about the 4th shot :-o Maybe I should either run a half marathon or just go to bed right after.
I'm 68 years old - still masking up at the gym though only a few others are (the few others all being much younger) - we have a very high vax rate here.
