After fierce public criticism that the Department of Justice has not done enough to hold former President Donald Trump and his supporters accountable for their efforts to overturn the election, The Washington Post on Wednesday published a major new report on Attorney General Merrick Garland's investigations.
"The criminal investigation into the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol has expanded to examine the preparations for the rally that preceded the riot, as the Justice Department aims to determine the full extent of any conspiracy to stop Congress from certifying Joe Bidens election victory, according to people familiar with the matter. In the past two months, a federal grand jury in Washington has issued subpoena requests to some officials in former president Donald Trumps orbit who assisted in planning, funding and executing the Jan. 6 rally," the newspaper reported, citing "people familiar with the matter" who were granted anonymity to speak candidly.

The criminal investigation into the Jan.
6 rally, said the people familiar with the matter, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation.
The development shows the degree to which the Justice Department investigation which already involves more defendants than any other criminal prosecution in the nations history has moved further beyond the storming of the Capitol to examine events preceding the attack.

After reading that I am hurt and disgusted with the DOJ, that investigation is a partisan hackery of stupidity layered with insanity.
And for what?
To say there's no there there?!

(15,246 posts)It started with the plea agreements with the people who went into the Capitol but did not engage in violence or destruction.
Then the prosecutors progressed to those who went in and did damage.
The next group were those who assaulted Capitol and DC Metro police, broke windows and caused general havoc.
After that, we saw the first seditious conspiracy charges, the first trial and first conviction.
Along the way, some of the rioters became co-operating witnesses.
Now we see DoJ has used the evidence they've collected to move further up the ladder to the planners and funders. And a GJ supoena has legal force behind it. Ignore it and go to jail for the length of the GJ, in most cases 18 months. Witnesses can be given use immunity, too, so no hiding behind the 5th Amendment if you don't want to answer a question.
But none of this happens in a few days or even a few months.

(146,192 posts)A great deal of investigating has already taken place. This grand jury is already two months old, apparently. It has issued subpoenas with regard to funding and executing the January 6 rally that led to the insurrection. So, for some months prior to that grand jury being seated, investigations had been going on, but not made public.
The DOJ, under the direction of AG Garland, is not releasing information to the public regarding ongoing investigations, until there is some news about a grand jury or determinations that have been made. That is normal historical procedure for the DOJ. During the Trump administration, that procedure was often not followed. During the Biden administration, it is once again being followed.
This and other investigations being conducted by the DOJ are ongoing and continuing. We will learn more about all of them when some action is taken, such as subpoenas to appear at a grand jury hearing, indictments issued by a grand jury, and arrests. We will not hear about the investigations, however, while they are ongoing.
All of this takes a great deal of time. There is no way to shortcut the process.
