Who's to say it wasn't a gift from a disgruntled russian trooper?
or they "forgot or misplaced" it...

During war there are many cases of friendly fire. In this case both sides are using the same equipment and confusion is a given.

Why did they choose a letter Z for their ordinance? I'll go with your reason.
