I really wanted to buy an American Hybrid but no-one makes one anymore. The only one left is the Ford Escape, but i'm not really wild about it. And I don't want to go full electric because of the limited range.

Toyota Hybrids are extremely reliable and are the best in the business. If you can afford it, get the RAV4 Prime which is a plug in hybrid. You get 30 miles of pure EV before the hybrid / gas engine kicks in. Based on my usage, which is commuting 2 miles each way to drop my kids off at daycare and even on the random days I go into the office 20 miles away I would rarely ever need to fill up my tank.
And Toyota, Honda, and other foreign makers employ American workers and have factories all over the US as well. I drive an
Acura MDX Hybrid which is an amazing vehicle that compromises it's ultimate fuel efficiency for a little bit of fun performance but i'll take that tradeoff as it still gets great MPG's for such a large vehicle.

(2,106 posts)If you never plug it in, it works similarly to the regular hybrid (but with beefier motor). The plug-in just lets you do short hops without burning a drop of fuel. Once the battery depletes, it runs just like a normal hybrid.
Alas, Toyota is only offering the Rav 4 hybrid in about 12 states (not mine).

(8,998 posts)I think the base Rav 4 works out a better deal in the long run.
We have a 2011 (bought Oct 2012) Rav 4 4x4 and never had any serious problems so far. Low mileage though. About 45000 so far.
Pity later models dropped the spare tire on the rear door. That is space saving.

(17,302 posts)I love it. I wanted a small vehicle and this just fits the bill. Only downside is very little storage space if the backseats are up. I knew this before I went with it. Also the price was very good and most of all the dealership is very nice and nearby for maintenance.

(25,257 posts)I have a 2014 conventional Soul and I love it. We're able to get from the Northern Suburbs of Chicago to Eden Prairie, Minnesota on one tank of gas. The car is comfortable. It has a hatchback and ample storage space in the back. The visibility all around the car is terrific. It's like sitting in a fishbowl. Great on the road and in the city. It gets us up to MN efficiently so we could visit the grandkids.
The problem is that Kia doesn't have a Soul Hybrid. They really should consider it. I know I'd buy one in an instant.
A straight EV model doesn't give me the range I need. A Soul Hybrid would be the best of both worlds for me.
Living in the Chicago Area - I'm concerned on performance in the winter for any EV. I hear that EV's are not as efficient in cold weather and they don't have the range I need.
That's why I'm focused on a Hybrid.
I would appreciate it if those of you in the know about Hybrid's could point me to a hybrid that would meet my similar requirements that the Soul does.
Is it a Toyota or a Honda hybrid that would suit my expectations?
