This puts Italy ahead of the UK, which already said they won't, and Germany, which gave a rather weak response. I posted about those tweets from the Kyiv Independent the other day.

(7,286 posts)Italy rarely appears on my radar as a country throwing their weight on geopolitical issues on this scale. Not saying they never have, just that I can't recall Italy making a stand such as this. Could be our press doesn't take notice, therefore I missed any occasion before.
Or our press has and I missed it.
But bravo!

(54,437 posts)Not one neutered, with its port of Sevastopol and it's major industrialized areas occupied by an aggressively imperialist neighbor. Ironically enough, Russia's economy would also profit immensely from a neutral, active trading center on its western border. Some of the most properous areas of France, Italy, Germany and Austria are the ones on the border with neutral Switzerland.
As for Italy, if they can somehow convince the Russians that a NATO member is willing to guarantee Ukraine's neutrality, that's fine with me. However, since if it were Russia, I wouldn't give their motives a whiff of sincerity, I don't think the Russians would see this as anything other than us trying to have NATO on the Ukrainian-Russian border under another name.
