Air Strikes Hit Ukraine's Strategic Black Sea Port Odessa
Odessa, a historic city of around one million people, is Ukraine's largest Black Sea port.
Odessa: Air strikes rocked Ukraine's strategic Black Sea port Odessa early Sunday morning, according to an interior ministry official, after Kyiv had warned that Russia was trying to consolidate its troops in the south.
"Odessa was attacked from the air," Anton Herashchenko, adviser to the interior minister, wrote on his Telegram account.
"Fires were reported in some areas. Some of the missiles were shot down by air defence."

(54,447 posts)Odessa is (or was) the only major Ukrainian seaport left relatively intact. Since Putin obviously has no intention of leaving the country intact as a viable economic entity, he has to destroy the last seaport that is the Ukrainian maritime gateway to commerce.
Just because Russian forces have determined that the cost of taking Kyiv would be too high, that doesn't mean that Putin has decided to leave the country intact if it isn't part of his own version of the reconstituted Soviet Empire. Will the west stand by helplessly as Putin does to Odessa as he did to Mariupol? Delivery of more and copious weapons in the next 72 hours could well decide Odessa's fate. I hope we call Putin on this. He seems like Saddam Hussein setting fire to Kuwait's oil fields as he retreated--"If I can't have it, no one can, not even the people who live there."

(38,958 posts)and they bother me very much, not that I am at all surprised by the activities of the Russians which are now being revealed, but increasing the suffering by freezing the folks in Europe which includes many women and children refugees is simply not feasible at this time. Cable Noise and even to a greater extent social media has taught us to look for the answer that is 10 words or less and there are very, very few of those in an increasingly complex world.
