Making the mistakes that doomed Hitler

Analysis by John Blake, CNN
Updated 4:39 AM ET, Sat April 2, 2022

... "I have been trying to make sense of this for a month, because as terrible as Putin is, you could never say he was illogical," says Peter T. DeSimone, an associate professor .. at Utica University ... "All of this is illogical, and that's the scary thing" ...

... Russian tanks have been stymied for another surprising reason: lack of fuel ...

... indiscriminately killing civilians to break the will of the Ukrainian people ... is having the opposite effect ...

... Putin's claim about "de-Nazification" is "grotesque" because he's trying to justify invading a democratic country -- led by a Jewish president who lost relatives in the Holocaust -- by claiming he's there to fight Nazis ...

And he'll kill anyone who stands in his way.
Unfortunately, he can't see that this will probably get him killed.
Just like Hitler.

Lenin Stalin Putin - the Holy Grail of Mother Russia.
I haven’t heard “legacy” used in any discussion but maybe I’ve missed it. This is his legacy and no one can stop him.

8. Well Hitler's big mistake was probably in invading the USSR

Though there were plenty other mistakes he made that doomed him. Like declaring war on the US. That was pretty stupid. I imagine the US population would support the war on Japan, but probably not on Germany, at least immediately. There was already a proxy war against Germany, but Hitler’s declaration allowed the US to gear up for warring with Germany immediately. I probably would have taken many months to convince the American public to go all out against Germany. Might have delayed the amount of support we gave to the Russians. That could have made a difference. Maybe.

9. I've done well by using the following line of reasoning.

"I assume the person is logical and the utterance has meaning."

"The person appears illogical and the utterance is meaningless. I've checked the grammar, I've checked word meanings ... I got nothing."

"Therefore, I am missing something, because the person is, as far as the person goes, logical; and the utterance is, as far as the person goes, meaningful. What, therefore, am I overlooking?" That gives me a basis for investigation--and more often than not, I learn something along the way. (Sometimes I cringe, sometimes I grin, but almost always I learn something about me or about the other person.)

The result may show the person to be utterly insane. Or to merely have a different set of facts--some true and some false, but perhaps just given different weightings (since virtually no set of facts is 100% internally consistent). Gee--a different set of facts. That gives me a basis for discussion, for understanding, for making hypotheses and predictions.

Sometimes what's different are weightings given to values. I get to understand another culture--perhaps one I thoroughly despise, but still, again, I learn something. And, in the end, I might be able to communicate.

...First, Hitler didn't anticipate that the anti-fa Allies would stand together to oppose him.
The tremendous manufacturing capability and resources of the Allies meant that
Hitler's days were numbered.

Second, Hitler had supply problems illustrated by the fact that fuel for Rommel's tanks
in Northern Africa had to be shipped from Italy. The strong Allied presence in the
Mediterranean made that very chancy for the Nazis. Rommel's tanks ran out of fuel
15 miles from Alexandria, where Rommel had fuel reserves. After Rommel's defeat
the focus of the war in Africa shifted to Italy and Hitler's days were numbered.

Those who don't learn from history repeat the same mistakes. A determined, capable
foe and internal problems with supply and command have destroyed many a dictator.
