House oversight chair says DOJ is 'obstructing' probe into Trump

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/house-oversight-chair-says-doj-obstructing-probe-trump-rcna23386

WASHINGTON — House Oversight Committee Chair Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., is alleging that the Department of Justice is "obstructing" the panel's investigation into former President Donald Trump by blocking the National Archives from handing over relevant documents.

In a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland Thursday, Maloney said the DOJ is "preventing" the National Archives from cooperating with the committee's request for documents and information, “including an inventory of 15 boxes of documents recovered from the former president’s Mar-a-Lago residence.”

The committee is conducting the investigation, Maloney said, because it has jurisdiction over the Presidential Records Act and is trying to determine the full scope of Trump's potential violations of that law.

In response to a request in February for those records, the Archives wrote on March 28, “With respect to your request for information about the contents of the 15 boxes that NARA received from President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence or about any reviews conducted by other federal agencies, based on our consultation with the Department of Justice, we are unable to provide any comment," Maloney said.

is not qualified to have an opinion about this and should not be talking about it. She just doesn't understand how these things work. She should just be patient.

Otherwise people on DU will call her a bad Democrat or a troll. Because Garland is perfect.

I agree with you.

I am hearing less from those DUers, mainly because I have become much more likely to Ignore fools here. I am sure they're still trying to silence everybody though.

the OP's previous message that Garland is an unquestionable hero and there is no doubt he will swoop suddenly onto the scene and put all to rights.

There was a lot of "he's totally going to act after x,y and z happens, buuuuut if he doesn't mayyyybe he's not all we want him to be."

That was from one who has been quite dedicated to calling everyone a troll or bad Democrat who does not have total faith in Garland.

It’s not yet clear if Justice Department officials have begun reviewing the materials in the boxes or seeking to interview those who might have seen them or been involved in assembling and moving them.

The question is WHY?

WHO DOES MERRICK GARLAND WORK FOR?

If Congress is bringing this up then this is a serious situation.

The Attorney General - any Attorney General should be free from political influence in order to protect the constitution and prosecute those who threaten the rule of law. I’m just not sure that can be said about the present or former Attorney Generals.

But blocking an investigation from proceeding is the opposite of acting impartially.

...so much as is he the right person to do what needs to be done. He seems to be very hesitant to add to the political division by prosecuting members of the former administration. This view is bolstered by NYT reports last week that Biden was critical that Garland was acting too much like a ponderous judge rather than prosecuting the crimes in front of him. His job isn't to weigh the consequences its to prosecute crimes based on evidence.
