I heard he was an accomplished cyclist and was involved in a bicycle accident. Hit by a commuter train.
This just sounded fishy to me. Has there been any info put out there on the circumstances of his accident?

(115,693 posts)If you want to whack a cyclist it's easier to make it look like an accident if you use a car or a truck. His death is a real loss but I'm sure it was an accident.

(4,787 posts)...at the station itself. The reports I saw didn't say that it was at a crossing, which I think probably would have been mentioned had that been the case. They have to investigate, which may require the completed autopsy results, based on the circumstances. i.e. Did he have a heart or some such thing that put him unexpectedly in the path of the train? His wife has said that she doesn't yet know any specifics about the crash.
I think this happened around 9 PM. He was in the habit of riding at night, which is inherently more dangerous, regardless of one's skills.

(47,147 posts)that makes the difference. Proper safety equipment and paying attention mostly. I don't suspect any foul play here, just a shocking accident or some health situation probably.

The details will be in the police report, which may or may not be made public.

(9,247 posts)not hear the train? Was there an object in the road that caused him (and bike) to be propelled in an unexpected direction? and no time to 'correct' and regain normal forward travel? Did he have some type of medical event/episode?
The train is on a track, right? We know the route of the train. The train doesn't change course to pull into your lane. The bike (or other vehicle) is the variable here... The vehicle will get in the train's way, but not the other way around. So, what happened?
Being a mature and experienced cyclist in familiar surroundings is what makes this difficult to understand. I look forward to getting more information on the accident.

Either he wasnt paying attention, tried to beat the train, or possibly took himself out.
I think most likely he tried to beat the train. Youd have to be really zoned out not to see or hear a train coming when on a bike. Even the light rail in my city has bells, lights, crossing arms
you can hear and see it from quite some distance.
