Disney executives, following intense pressure from their employees and fans, denounced the bill in a statement after DeSantis signed into law. The company vowed to help organizations working to repeal it.
Now, like a disgruntled despot demanding fealty, Florida Republicans and their allies are looking for ways to punish Disney for its stance belated as it was in support of LGBTQ people.
Last week, Florida state Rep. Spencer Roach said he and other lawmakers have considered revoking a state law enacted in 1967 that effectively gives Disney unique autonomy over its massive Florida properties, including Disney World. ...

Copyright and trademark laws protect her show, all conservative publications and creations. If the GOP tries to punish Disney, Apple or anyone else by attacking their intellectual property rights, they will be shooting themselves in the foot.
These laws apply to everyone. They cannot be used against individuals or private companies without exposing conservative rights to the same applications of those laws.
Republicans have lost their shit. It's pathetic.

Not good politics to try to harm Disney.

(32,083 posts)Messing with the House of Mouse is stupid in and of itself. They will not win. But, calling for a boycott of the state's biggest tourist attraction is sheer stupidity--especially one that relies on tourist dollars for their state revenues.

(219 posts)Is the party of fear, fraud and fascism a case of 'You get what you pay for'? You bought these politicians on the cheap to do your bidding. All they do is create chaos and corrupt everything they touch. I don't think having insane people intent on running the government into the ground is good for business. I know it's not good for America. Do you really want to be associated with these snakes? Invest wiser. Better yet, support public funding of election campaigns. Yeah, I know the answer. But, I can ask!!!

As MSNBC colleague Jahan Jones explained, Florida Republicans and their allies wasted no time making plans to retaliate against the company for daring to say something uncomplimentary. In fact, as GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis said the companys criticism crossed the line, Republican policymakers in the state announced plans to re-evaluate Disneys special corporate benefits in Florida.
Now, evidently, such attitudes have spread from Tallahassee to Washington, D.C. Even Republican Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida whod be ordinarily expected to side with one of his home states biggest companies condemned Disneys leadership for engaging in radical activism.
To the extent that reality matters, thats not what Disney did. The so-called Dont Say Gay law is a regressive policy thats tough to defend on the merits. As Slates Mark Joseph Stern explained as the measure worked its way through the GOP-led state legislature, the proposal uses intentionally vague language to outlaw a huge amount of speech about LGBTQ people, families, and issues not just sex in every grade. And it relies upon a vigilante enforcement mechanism to chill an even broader amount of speech by subjecting violators to humiliating investigations and ruinous lawsuits......
What matters in this instance, however, is the brazen perversion of the GOPs free-market principles. This is a case in which a political party wants to selectively punish a specific business because it had the audacity to say something unflattering about anti-LGBTQ politicians. Republicans wouldve been perfectly content giving Disney what it wanted, but after the corporation hurt GOP officials feelings, its apparently time for retaliatory measures in part to punish Disney, and in part to send a message to other corporations that might be tempted to say things Republicans dont like.
The larger significance of such a posture is important shift in the partys tactics. As The Washington Posts Catherine Rampell explained in a recent column, The GOP no longer argues that free markets, rather than government, should choose winners and losers. In todays Republican Party, the primary economic role of the state is not to get out of the way. It is, instead, to reward friends and crush political enemies.
Respect for free markets is not long part of the GOP ideology which is not surprising. The GOP has long ceased to stand for any values other than tax cuts for the rich.

(1,454 posts)the ENTIRETY of central Florida would still be nothing but orange groves. After they moved there, others followed - Paramount, Universal, etc. This created thousands of jobs, saw thousands of homes built and a support industry sprung up to cater to all the new needs of residents. The Orlando area grew exponentially.
Florida would still be an alligator infested swamp if not for Disney.
But little Ronnie - butt trumpet wannabe - will continue to wave his dick around to show us all what a mean fascist, racist, misogynistic and homophobic little prick he is.
