Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsWhat I saw yesterday was absolutely insane and pathetic disregard...
to our country, democracy, Justice Brown Jackson.
To watch the majority of the Republicans walk out of the Senate after the confirmation votes were tallied was astonishing. I can not recall the Democrats doing this ever and wtf, they could have done that after Kavanaugh was confirmed. But they had pride and the graciousness not to. History was made yesterday and yet again the GOBers will be on the wrong side of history. Just as they were when Obama was voted in, ill-fated Trump, January 6, 2021 and a few other times. We live in a time where media covers everything and just seeing what happened yesterday, sickened me to the core. It should have been a momentous day, yet the GOBers have to steal the show with their pathetic antics.

(46,104 posts)1. Mitch McConnell, as Senate Majority Leader, refused to even schedule a vote, let alone hearings, for President Obama's nominee for the USSC, Merrick Garland -- 11 months before the end of his presidential term. McConnell claimed that "The People" should decide the next justice via the next general election.
2. Mitch McConnell, again as Senate Majority Leader, hastened and fast-tracked the confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett six weeks before Joe Biden was to be inaugurated. Made up a new rule: The Senate can approve a new justice if the Senate and the President are the same political party, no matter how close a new administration will be installed.
3. Ironically, if McConnell hadn't changed the Senate Rules to remove the filibuster for voting for USSC justices, he could have held up the vote for KBJ.
4. "Allowing" even one justice who is sponsored by the Democratic Party to be installed, even as a replacement, is unbearable for McConnell and the Republicans. What they fear: the articulate and stinging dissents that will criticize anticipated conservative judicial activism from The Bench and poorly reasoned opinions that overturn precedent.
5. To Republicans, the concept of bipartisanship is essentially dead. Whatever Democrats want, they're against. Completely contrarian.

(22,037 posts)I don't think you're correct that Republicans fear the dissents that Justice Jackson may write in the future. They aren't afraid because they don't have any conscience. You cannot shame them as they don't care.
Perhaps the GOP's disgusting behavior over the past dozen years has simply shown the world that Republicans don't believe in democracy and equality. They crave power and money. They desire to preserve their white privilege. It's really that simple.
I don't even think they care about Justice Jackson's intellectual brilliance. Even if she does "show up" Kavanaugh or Barrett, they still have a solid conservative majority and can win most cases. Remember that Thomas' incompetence and partisanship hasn't stopped him once during his decades on the bench.
The scourge of the Republican Party will be with us until it self-implodes or most Americans finally rise up to say, "Enough!"

(5,842 posts)It's what the Rs have been doing and promise to keep doing if they should take over the Senate again. McConnell has blatantly said this himself.
They are packing the courts with political hacks who are there to do their bidding. Just look at the recent SCOTUS rulings and you'll see their activist judges are doing their political will for them, since they don't have majorities in either chamber.
And they have the GALL to criticize any judicial decision that doesn't go their way as "activist." They have the GALL to scream and whine about court-packing, when that's what they've been doing all along.
How the Democrats can't see this and DO SOMETHING is beyond me, man. I am sick and tired of them "playing fair." They need to get in the mud and wrestle with this pig.
The SCOTUS should have 15 term-limited justices. You serve for 20 years and you're done, thank you for your service. When your term is up, whoever is president appoints your replacement. It'll be done on a rotating bases so it's a crap-shoot regarding whether the replacement will be appointed by a D or an R. It's the only way to bring back legitimacy to the SCOTUS. Right now their reputation is in the toilet, and it's because of court-packing.
And I'm still pissed that Obama allowed McConnell to push him around with Garland. Garland would have made a fine SCOTUS justice. Obama could have pushed back and went ahead with the nomination. Of course it would have ended in the courts but constitutionally, Obama was on firm ground and McConnell was not. Now that McConnell got away with it, he'll do it again and again if he can. Grrrrrrrrrrr.

(5,842 posts)He saw the writing on the wall and truly worried that Biden would win the presidency and they'd lose their majority in the Senate, which meant that they would need the activist SCOTUS to legislate from the bench.
And that is exactly what is happening.

A great deal of pointed disrespect WAS PURPOSEFULLY heaped upon a fiercely intelligent #BlackWoman, now elevated to the highest court in the land, who EARNED HER PLACE because of HER QUALIFICATIONS and CAPABILITIES, not because of her color, but in spite of her color. Finally, the mantle of Justice Thurgood Marshall has a most worthy recipient.
Every Republican* that walked out should be ashamed.

It's just another display of 5-year old's throwing a temper tantrum. The Repukes who got up and left reminded me of naughty children who missed their naptime.
The truth is that Judge Jackson is better qualified to sit on the SCOTUS bench than ALL THREE of their recent candidates. For most of us it brought tears and smiles to see Justice Jackson being elected to SCOTUS in that historic event.
