Mitch McConnell On Why He Would Back Trump In 2024: Party Comes FirstMitch McConnell explained why he would support Donald Trump in 2024 despite calling him "morally responsible" for the Jan. 6 insurrection.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell may have said Donald Trump was practically and morally responsible for the Jan. 6 insurrection, but he admits there is nothing the former president could do that would cause him not to support Trump if hes nominated in 2024.
In a new interview, the Kentucky Republican told Axios.com reporter Jonathan Swan that his obligation to support the nominee of my party extends to Trump despite the vast evidence suggesting the former president conspired to overthrow the 2020 election.
McConnell has made similar comments about supporting a Trump bid in 2024, but his most current comments came after Swan asked McConnell about his moral red lines.
Help me understand this, Swan said. I watched your speech last year in February on the Senate floor after the second impeachment vote for Donald Trump.
Swan was surprised that McConnell could support a man he called morally responsible for an attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Swan is a good writer and reporter but his "surprise" illustrates that he, like too many in the media, doesn't think historically. They only look at today's headlines without putting the actors' behaviors in a broader context.
McConnell has been against our democracy forever. His actions with respect to Merrick Garland's SCOTUS nomination, his furiously fast-pace confirmation of Barrett and all of his obstructionism have been obvious for decades.
Swan should think a little more broadly. Then he won't be "surprised."

(5,842 posts)Surprised? Where the hell has he been since the whole Merrick Garland fiasco, with 11 months left in Obama's term? McConnell recently said that if the Rs are in charge of the Senate, Biden's pick - no matter who - won't get a hearing.
When people show you who they are, believe them the first time.

Democracy, The Constitution, the rule of law...none of that matters to a person like Mitch McConnell. Don't believe for a moment that Mitch McConnell cares at all about abortion, education, or transgender teenagers running on a track team. The culture wars are for show. To a man like Mitch McConnell it is about the thrill of power. It is a sickness.

But yet they'd legislate their morals for us if they had the opportunity.
