I have loathed her from across the state line for a loooong time. But I have to give her her due, she's true to her country first and I admire and thank her for showing it now when it really matters.

I am not so small that I condemn every R that I encounter because they're everywhere around these parts and if one is to survive, it comes down to helping each other first, then argue about politics. When I was up in the mountains, I lived in a high elevation town of about 1200 souls with up to 6 months of winter each year. We had to rely on our neighbors when the power for the town went out while it's -40F, those with wood stoves took in those without, or to pull your car out of the snowbank you just slid into, or loan you some fire wood. Hell, my car mechanic and I had some serious arguments about wildlife at the bar but I still relied on him to keep my car running and safe and could feel confident he wasn't screwing me over.

Cooperation, it's a necessary component of life.

But I have to say that Liz Cheney (who politically I have very little in common with) has earned my respect as a public servant. These and other comments she has made underscores her understanding of what being a 'servant' to the public actually means. She's put everything on the line to push back against the tidal wave of unAmerican actions and words spewing from her own party.

Country over party.

That's easy to say but bucking the wave is far more difficult.

So, to both Raskin and Cheney for doing the work and representing American values and democratic principles.

We need more like them on both sides of the aisle.

Two people from different parties, with different ideologies, both publicly stating their understanding that duty to the Constitution, the nation, the rule of law, should transcend party ideology and be a minimum requirement to fill a seat in Congress.
The implication is that almost all Republicans just want to "fill the seat"'; to get a paycheck as a Senator or Congressman without the courage to actually fulfill their oath of office.
If they are willing to surrender their honor an dignity because they fear Trump's wrath, then there is no reason for them to be in the Congress.
Unfortunately, they don't even have the ethics to resign, or not seek reelection.

This is how a Democracy fails; when those who represent the will of the people surrender their will to a would-be tyrant.

Awesome post by Steve Schmidt also.

Jamie Raskin, it goes without saying, is one of the greatest Constitutional scholars in the House today and he has respect and friendship for Rep. Cheney.

I'm reading Jamie Raskin's book "Unthinkable" right now, and it is really a thoughtful exploration into the attempted coup of Chump and the Repukes. It is also a sincere eulogy to his son who died by suicide just before the Jan 6th. coup attempt. Sad and moving, but enlightening in many ways. Highly recommended!

This RepubliQan state of affairs is not something which appeared with Trump and might not outlast him. It goes all the way back to Nixon, then Reagan, was nutrured and developed by Gingrich, and is now part of RepubliQan DNA. The hasn't the chance of the proverbial snowball in hell.

That's the level of trust many of us (at DU) have.
I trust them to be untrustworthy.

Public trust? They abdicated that effort long ago, but since tfg was elected they really lost whatever remained.
And the fact that now, many of us are "forced" to admire or respect Liz Cheney is a a kick in the gut. Displaying principles when that's so rare in her party has become admirable when it should be commonplace. Still, she spoke eloquently and from the heart. Surprised to find out she has one, and a spine when others in her party are spineless.

I met a tfg supporter yesterday, with t-shirt and hat and a rude loud mouth proclaiming her attitude.
Dilligaf was her favorite word. I asked what it meant, she replied "do I look like a give a fuck?" If rethug representatives are hearing from constituents like her, and say that themselves, then they really aren't public servants. They're self serving, and represent the self serving. Liz makes a good point.

Excellent input from Steve Schmidt, as usual.

That right there will tell you all you'll ever need to know about the vast majority of the GOP's thoughts on god and the Constitution.

99% are liars and hypocrites, but to their gullible "base" they're as honest and trustworthy as Abe Lincoln. These people should never be allowed to hold any public office.
