Gun control groups petition the Federal Trade Commission

Gun control groups petition the Federal Trade Commission.
Giffords and March for Our Lives were among the groups asking the body to look into the marketing tactics of the gun industry, which has allegedly led Americans to falsely “believe that gun ownership is a safe way to protect their home and family.” The petition says that the FTC “has effectively given the gun industry a free pass.” The New York Times was the first to report on the petition. While a federal law shields the gun industry from many lawsuits, the FTC can enforce federal consumer protection laws that advocates hope could lead to lawsuits similar to those that have successfully advanced in state courts.

The PLCAA shields gun makers and sellers from civil suits, the only industry to have such legal protection, but it can't protect their false advertising claims. Guns are marketed as everything from a cure for ED to the ultimate protection for the home. 79% of gun owners say they have the gun for protection. Ask any of our resident gunners and they'll say the same thing, to protect life and property. Yet every reliable study indicates that having a gun in the house puts those living there at increased risk of injury and death by that gun. As much as 500% increased risk. If gun makers were forced to tell the truth there wouldn't be more guns than people in America. Tens of thousands of people wouldn't get killed every year.

It costs money to bring a petition to the government. How did the Giffords group and a bunch of high school students raise enough cash to hire lawyers to take their case to the FTC? We gave it to them. People like you and me donated a few dollars each. Thousands of people like you and me. Join us.
