(52,227 posts)we will have merely delayed their takeover by 4 years.
if somehow a semi-reasonable republican were to win and disavow their extremist tactics, democracy could survive. but that's effectively impossible given today's republican party.
another 4 years of donnie's brand of extremism would normalize that kind of politics, and we're doomed if that happens. democracy can only survive if that is an anomaly.

(52,227 posts)they're trapped in an ideology of foxnews' making.
donnie was nothing special, really. he was just the canonical curmudgeon who gets his entire political outlook straight from foxnews. such people are a dime a dozen these days, and the next republican president would in all likelihood be a more competent and more extreme version of donnie.
i can think of only one republican who might not be an immediate, complete disaster, and that's rmoney (he'd a bad, but not necessarily and end to democracy kind of bad), and he has zero chance of getting nominated in today's republican party.

(5,557 posts)They could have filled those scotus seats, packed the court more if they didn't trust Roberts, removed the legislative filibuster, and passed anything they wanted.
We were lucky they didn't seem to want to do it, and were content with their tax fuckery.
We stopped them only because they chose to let the clock run out. Are you confident they will do that again?

(54,770 posts)trump would not have been elected in 2020 if just enough Democrats hadnt thrown a fit because their guy lost the primaries.
If trump or someone like him wins, its voters fault.

(52,227 posts)they'll have enough to prevent a veto override and that's all they really need.
the next republican president would continue donnie's efforts to corrupt the federal bureacracy. the usps would throw away ballots from certain locations. the irs would effectively announce that the rich no longer need to pay taxes, except for certain democrats. the entire election process would be corrupted, or at least the states would be given the green light to corrupt their elections.
between that and the relentless propaganda, our democracy would never recover. well, maybe in a few decades....

(2,177 posts)The danger to democracy is there, but sweeping statements distract us from seeing specific issues and actions that will prevent the destruction you fear.
I get that this may be venting or some other kind of catharsis for you, but what are people supposed to do with this?
Itemize the systemic failings and attack them each in turn.

(3,858 posts)And we will survive them in the future. We have a long history of taking two steps forward and one step back. Things are far better now than when I was born and even better still from when my parents were born. We will continue to progress as a country and as a culture.

(17,598 posts)when Reagan was asked for another 8 years - e.g. ignore the constitution - his immediate response was to decline. When McCain was asked to attack Obama on election night - he called Obama a great American with a different way of doing things.
Today we have the repug leaders lying about election outcomes, accusing Democrats of the very crimes they themselves are committing, and taking money from foreign enemies.
And as importantly, voter suppression in red states is beyond the tipping points. The will of the voters is not being counted anymore. If the repugs can do the same federally, and further corrupt the supreme court, there are no political levers to turn back.
