(Belleview Police Department)
BELLEVIEW, Fla. A teenager is dead and two teenagers have been arrested after police in Florida said the boys took turns shooting at each other while wearing body armor.
Police responded to a call of a shooting Sunday and found Christopher Leroy Broad Jr., 16, shot inside of a home. He was transported to a hospital, where he died from his injuries.
A police investigation found that Joshua Vining, 17, and Broad were taking turns shooting at each other while wearing a vest that contained a form of body armor. Broad Jr., 16, died after he was hit by a bullet fired by Vining, WFTV reported.
On Thursday, police arrested Vining and Colton Whitler, also 17. Vining was charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child with a firearm and Whitler was charged with providing false information to law enforcement, according to the Belleview Police Department.

(43,398 posts)Yahoo link that was grabbed from Fox (it was the first decent link that worked) in that first OP that I self-deleted. Obviously I would never use Fox national news (the main site) for some remotely subjective posting.
I have no idea why it is (there are some exceptions) that SO many US telly stations (local) and so many smaller (big exception, the NY Daily News, which really sucks as it is posted here all the time) US newspapers (mostly local or state-wide) are blocked for us in the EU. Compliance with our privacy laws is not hard at all.
I so so tire of this:

(22,037 posts)These kids seem to be lacking in humanity. Their parents haven't done a very good job of raising their kids.
As the saying goes, play stupid games...
Guns are so dangerous that it escapes me why these kids would think it's fun to shoot at one another.
The national obsession with firearms is profoundly disturbing to me. Why is it that we hear about tragedies caused by guns but we NEVER hear a story about the "good guy with a gun?"
I've never fired a weapon and I plan to keep it that way.

(28,476 posts)but I think the kid on the left, who pulled the trigger, looks scared and possibly remorseful. He bought the NRA bullshit and figured this would be fun. I want to know where they got the gun, and if from their parents, when those parents will be charged with neglect and endangerment.

I have fired a gun. Target shooting with a boyfriend decades ago. Big hand-gun. If he had not been standing directly behind me, I probably would have fallen on my backside.
Target shooting was kind of fun, but I had the sense that it would have been fun for me even if I had been using a sling-shot. In other words, it wasn't the gun that made it fun, but the challenge of hitting the target. Might as well have been playing cornhole, or bowling. Call me crazy, but I happen to think things are fun when nobody gets hurt.

(814 posts)The parents of the culprits? Definitely, they are at fault for not instilling common sense and a respect for human life. That's not a crime, though, so the parents get off. The culprits themselves? Definitely, as well. They are old enough to have known better, regardless of what they were or weren't taught. One culprit is dead, the other two are going into the judicial meat grinder. No innocent people were harmed. Case closed.

(814 posts)Placing all the blame for this incident at the feet of the NRA, gun dealers, gun owners, non-gun-owners who just don't think gun control is effective, and giving a complete pass to the people who actually committed the violent act is the reason that gun control advocates come off as intellectually dishonest. Most people just can't wrap their heads around the notion that someone who did absolutely nothing illegal is more to blame than the people who illegally obtained and used a gun to directly cause a death (the 3 shooters), or the people who were primarily responsible for teaching the 3 shooters the most basic principles of responsible, ethical conduct (their parents).

Your hobby is the cause of murder and mayhem on a daily basis. Those who insist on their right to engage in the hobby are the ones who need to solve that problem.
And seriously, you're lumping yourself in with the NRA and saying gun control advocates are intellectually dishonest? That is just hilarious!
It's like there's a string someone pulls and all the same words come out of all the mouths.

Never point a gun at anything you are unwilling to destroy.

At this point, if you aren't doing those things, you aren't a responsible gun owner.

Why? Instead of punting the ball, why not actually do something about it? Hunger strikes are effective. So is peaceful civil disobedience such as handcuffing oneself to the door of a gun shop.
What isn't effective is posting on the internet and then congratulating oneself for a job well done.
It's human nature to take extreme action when faced with an extreme situation or dealing with an issue of great importance and to do nothing when not. Thus one can tell just how seriously a person feels about an issue by how they react to it. Where do you fall?
Scrivener7
(50,950 posts)hunger strikes?

(36,307 posts)People who feel strongly about an issue will risk much in dealing with it. Look at the examples of MLK, Malcom X, Gandhi, Jimmie Lee Jackson, John Lewis and so many others. People who risked everything in fighting, by peaceful means, for what they believed was right. Heck, even Cindy Sheehan gave up her marriage, her job and her friends for her cause.
Change isn't brought about by people who post on the Internet and maybe attend the occasional candle light vigil.

(3,338 posts)The first segment Knoxville ever filmed for what would eventually become the hit MTV show Jackass was a self-defense test in which the star was tased, pepper-sprayed and, ultimately, shot with a gun for Big Brother magazine. My friend, beautiful Jason, was supposed to shoot me while I wore a bulletproof vest, but we got out there and he no longer wanted to shoot me, so I had to shoot myself, Knoxville said. As I was doing it, someone pulled up behind me I think they were high on speed and they wanted to know where the recycling center was. I had this gun and had to hide it behind my back.
This type of potential copycat behavior wouldnt surprise me. So sad that a teenager lost his life.

(38,559 posts)I still don't understand how it is that ANYONE thinks that playing with a gun is a good idea. Of course, "thinking" is term not often associated with the teenage brain.
I am unfamiliar w/ FL gun laws. They were minors with a gun... are they allowed to posses guns? If not, where did they get it. No gun violations are mentioned.
