Was the brains behind the attempted coup really Don Jr and not his father?

Legal experts are calling for Donald Trump Jr. to face criminal proceedings after newly revealed text messages obtained by the January 6 House committee show he sought to prevent certification of the 2020 election and install his father to a second term.
While votes for the 2020 election were being counted, Trump Jr. texted then-White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows laying out a strategy to keep President Donald Trump in power by throwing out election results of key swing states, CNN reported Friday. The disclosed texts shed further light on recent revelations of Trump and his inner circle's efforts to block the certification of the 2020 election.
The texts between Trump's eldest son and the top White House aide describe a course of action to keep the president in power: prevent swing states from certifying their results through lawsuits and demanding recounts. After casting doubt on the election's legitimacy, GOP-controlled Legislatures could assemble pro-Trump slates for the Electoral College, according to CNN.
"This was an attempted putsch," Richard Painter, a law professor and former chief ethics lawyer for former President George W. Bush, said on Twitter. "He belongs in the slammer!"

TFG thinks everyone (in particular our sons and daughters serving in the US Armed Forces) are "suckers" and "losers." Of course he sees his own Republican spawn that way, as well.

(111,097 posts)A meeting took place at Trump Tower in New York City on June 9, 2016, between three senior members of the 2016 Trump campaign Donald Trump Jr., Jared Kushner, and Paul Manafort and at least five other people, including Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya. The meeting was arranged by publicist and long-time Trump acquaintance Rob Goldstone on behalf of his client, Russian singer-songwriter Emin Agalarov.[1] The meeting was first disclosed to U.S. government officials in April 2017, when Kushner filed a revised version of his security clearance form.[2]
Donald Trump Jr. made several misleading statements about the meeting.[3] He initially told the press that the meeting was held to discuss adoptions of Russian children by Americans. On July 8, 2017, after news reports stated that Trump Jr. knew the meeting was political, he admitted in a tweet that he had agreed to the meeting with the understanding that he would receive information damaging to Hillary Clinton, and that he was conducting opposition research.[4] When The New York Times was about to report on email exchanges between Goldstone and Trump Jr., Trump Jr. himself published the emails.[5][6] In early July 2017, it was reported that President Donald Trump himself drafted Trump Jr.'s initial misleading statement.[7] The report was later confirmed by the president's attorneys.[8] In July 2018, the president denied knowledge of the meeting.[9]

wasn't involved. The orange toad was in it up to his ears. Just the seven-hour gap in his phone records shows that. And that's just one example. And there's the 5-hour delay in calling out the Nat'l Guard, the previous purge of DoD top officails who were replaced by trump loyalist also.
That wasn't accidental. That was planned in anticipation for when complicity was needed, and it was needed on Jan. 6.
They all belong in prison.

(9,670 posts)And his father is culpable for being the ringleader. Not sure if Eric was allowed to leave his day care long enough to plan crimes, but if so, he was probably in on it too. Ivanka and Jared were not.
Wouldn't it be delightful to see the three of them frog-marched into federal prison?

Someone had to be telling TFG what to do, he couldn't have thought this up himself.

Let's assume he did write it. That would indicate that he was in communications with people who had the general plan that was in play at the time -- going to court, attempting to postpone the election from being certified for Biden. Certainly, he would think that his team controlled the federal courts, as well as holding significant power in several of the "contested" states. But there is no reason to believe that Junior had any mastery that would allow him to come up with that type of legal strategy on his own. Someone (actually, a small group) planted this concept in his head, encouraging him to pass it on to Meadows to get the White House on board.
I think it is a case of the infamous "Peter Principle" when one objectively evaluates Junior's role in his father's crimes, from business to politics to the insurrection. Lacking any real insight or talents, he was more in the mode of a Supreme Court Injustice's wife -- a participant, but not the brains. The texts he sent started in the weeks and month after the election, and although he was hoping for the courts to overturn the voters' choice, it is legal for a campaign to file in the courts. Obviously, the 60+ cases the Trumpites filed indicate they had no legal footing to stand upon.
What remains to be seen -- at least by the public -- is what role the boy played in the planning of the January 6 insurrection. A solid case can be made that he appeared to not only know there would be violence in DC, but that the very thought made him giddy with anticipation. See:

Yet the planning for the violence, while definitely meeting with his approval, was not his product. It is essential to keep in mind that the planners were convinced that Black Lives Matter and antifa would be there to fight the Trump forces. Steve Bannon believed that the fight would spill inside the Capital building. There had been people such as General Flynn openly discussing martial law in the weeks before the insurrection. One recalls film of Mike the Pillow Fighter going into the White House to advocate such a plan around the time Flynn was advocating the military take over deciding "contested" elections. Flynn and Bannon were at the top level of planning the violence, Junior and Pillow Guy were messengers, carrying the top level's instructions.
