Here's how our world could be set straight

If aliens showed up.

Their arrival would demolish our political differences.

Their arrival would destroy all religions.

Their arrival, whether benign or malignant, would unify humans around the world.

But it's not going to happen. Aliens exist everywhere in the universe but they're bound by the same physics as humans. They're not coming.

They are sitting out there waiting for us to grow the fuck up. We seem to be a violent people intent on destroying the very planet that gave birth to us. Who likes hanging out with mean, stupid beings?

we aren't aware of yet, yet aren't aware of us in our remote spot on an arm of yet another spiral gallery.

It's possible. New physics discoveries are being made quite often by our scientists.

I'm not so sure anymore. No matter when or where, there is always a contingent that doesn't give a crap about the community. They'll sell the rest of us out or try to grift anything good for themselves. The pandemic has shown me that there are a lot more of them than I thought.

the experience of the past few years should've pretty conclusively disproven that hypothesis.

Millions of our species died, yet we still did not come together.

In fact, I think we are more divided than before.

people would probably settle down a bit if half the population suddenly vanished; instead we seem to be hell-bent to kill ourselves off painfully over several centuries since we're clearly doing fuck all to mitigate or even cope with climate change.

anyway I disagree--unless aliens literally and in plain sight took over all the world's governments and took control of all media, you'd just have probably a majority of the population saying "this is fake news" and ignoring the obvious evidence of extra-terrestrial visitation because it is unacceptable to their world-view (you know, pretty much like the situation is now).
