Putin executes Ukrainians, terrorizes the world, and is guilty of war crimes. Now he admits to the world he will fuck with our politics (he has been for a while but didn't admit it) and we just let him? We just send prayers to Ukraine?

WASHINGTON (AP) Russian President Vladimir Putin may use the Biden administrations support for Ukraine as a pretext to order a new campaign to interfere in American politics, U.S. intelligence officials have assessed.
Intelligence agencies have so far not found any evidence that Putin has authorized measures like the ones Russia is believed to have undertaken in the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections in support of former President Donald Trump, according to several people familiar with the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive findings.
But given Putins antipathy toward the West and his repeated denunciations of Ukraine, officials believe he may see the U.S. backing of Ukraines resistance as a direct affront to him, giving him further incentive to target another U.S. election, the people said. It is not yet clear which candidates Russia might try to promote or what methods it might use.
The assessment comes with the U.S. electoral system already under pressure. The American public remains sharply divided over the last presidential election and the insurrection that followed at the U.S. Capitol, when supporters of Trump tried to stop the certification of his loss to President Joe Biden. Trump has repeatedly assailed intelligence officials and claimed investigations of Russian influence on his campaigns to be political vendettas.

(51 posts)will there be more resolve in our infrastructure to counter it? This is not a rhetorical question. For anyone in the know and who have lived longer than I, do you see a more strident effort to detect and deal with this sort of chicanery? I think many people were reeling after 2016. And given how brazen it was gearing up to be in 2020, many wondered if there was the proper infrastructure in place to handle it. One one hand, America was able to rally NATO into imposing sanctions on Russia. But at the same time, it's justice department is dragging its foot on the January 6th investigation.

(6,535 posts)why even bother trying to justify it? He's clearly been interfering with U.S. and European politics for quite some time now.
I suppose others can also cite the Ukraine war as justification for pushing for regime change in Moscow, which makes more sense from an ethical standpoint but is still at the end of the day just part of an ongoing contest for domination and control over the world's resources.
