Why is the right so obsessed with bathroom issues? Behind the new wave of anti-LGBTQ attacks

A panel of experts on conservative fascination with bodily functions — it's vicious, illogical and also revealing

Republicans have become increasingly obsessed with bathrooms, toilets, locker rooms and other such spaces. At TFG's recent rally in Georgia, for instance, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene told the audience that "Pete Buttigieg can take his electric vehicles and his bicycles and he and his husband can stay out of our girls' bathrooms."

Greene was wallowing in obvious anti-gay bigotry and stereotypes. But she knows her audience well: Trumpists and Republican voters generally share her vile beliefs. Of course the facts do not matter: Like other so-called conservatives, Greene is fomenting a moral panic around the specious claim that the LGBTQ community somehow poses a "threat" to the "traditional family" and offers another example of how "real Americans" — meaning white, supposedly Christian conservatives — are somehow being oppressed or discriminated against in "their own country."

[What Is an Anal Personality?

Also known as being anal retentive, an anal personality is thought of as someone with an extreme need to control their environment. The person with an anal personality will also have an obsessive attention to detail (even non-essential details) to the point that it might annoy others.

The anal personality is generally perceived as anxious and unable to manage the impulse to control situations. Their behavior goes beyond being helpful. For example, a person with an anal personality might research a product endlessly before buying it.

Freud's Theory of the Anal Personality

Are you curious about the origins of the term anal personality? It dates back to the time of Austrian neurologist Sigmund Freud, who was the first to propose the existence of this personality type as part of psychoanalytic theory.

Freud wrote about the anal-retentive personality in his early works on psycho-sexual development. Freud argued that there were three psycho-sexual stages during early child development:

Oral: From birth to one year
Anal: From Age 1 to Age 3
Phallic: From Age 3 to Age 6]
