Even after Trump's defeat, rather than see Republicans and Right Wing move toward the middle, we are instead seeing Republicans and Right Wing media grow even more overtly racist. On Fox, Tucker Carlson is increasingly over in his appeals to white supremacy such as invoking the euphemism of white replacement theory, and Republicans everywhere are searching for new divisive causes whether it is attacks on critical race theory or banning the use of the word gay.
The reason for this is that white supremacy is an excellent way to develop a coalition between billionaires such as the Koch Brothers and the white working class. With racism, you can have populist plutocrats who appeal to the white working class by stoking resentment against working class African Americans or immigrant communities. Indeed, by appealing to racism, Republicans can supply cruelty, hate and outrage, and in return, the white working class will support tax cuts for the rich, the privatization of social security, rolling back health care benefits and Medicare, and the rolling back of consumer and environmental protections. Indeed, such programs that are designed to help the working class, become stigmatized as "elitist."
This is why Republicans have abandoned the fig leaf of any sort of intellectual grounding for conservative ideas. Heck, at one time, Republicans prided themselves on opposition to Russia, but with Putin echoing ring wing nationalist and racist themes, you are seeing Republicans starting to readily echo Russian talking points.
Where does it end? Well, you need only look to Russia to see modern conservativism perfected with the media working in synchronized fashion to propagate pro-Putin talking points and dissenters suppressed.

(5,842 posts)Most of us grow up learning that hate shouldn't be tolerated, it's a "bad" emotion. We grow up with people telling us that if we express such shitty emotions towards others, we're "bad people." Hate is such a STRONG emotion and we've been told to stuff it.
And here comes the orange motherfucker. He made hate an acceptable mainstream emotion. And suddenly the deplorables felt vindicated. It's acceptable to express all that shit in public now. THAT is the worst thing he did to America, IMO. That can't be pushed back under its slimy rock. It's every deplorable's id running rampant. And the worst thing? THERE ARE NO REPERCUSSIONS. No one pushes them back and tells them they shouldn't hate others anymore, especially not when the "president" of the country told them it's fine.
