Mariupolis: An Archive

Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the people of Mariupol – a city of half a million – have been besieged. We have heard from our families and friends, still stranded in our city, that hundreds of thousands remain – with no stable food source, no potable water, little mobile connectivity, electricity, or gas, all in freezing weather conditions.
These are their stories.

I first heard the name "Mariupolis" used as the name of a documentary about the city of Mariupol, which depicted everyday life as the city faced advances from Russian-backed forces in 2014. The director of the documentary, Mantas Kvedaravičius, 45, was a Lithuanian filmmaker. He was killed by the Russians as he tried to escape the city about one week ago.

I don't know if Mariupolis the archive is named for the documentary, but if it is, it honors the late director and carries on his legacy.
