Chancellor Karl Nehammer flies to Putin in Moscow tomorrow

After his trip to the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj , Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) is planning the next explosive visit: the target is the Russian President Vladimir Putin, as it became known on Sunday evening. The trip is scheduled to start tomorrow Monday.
The initiative for this came from him, said Nehammer on Sunday, even while the trip to Ukraine was being planned. The trip was discussed in advance with EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
According to the Chancellor, Nehammer wants to act as a "bridge builder" and "try everything to get a little closer to peace". This requires not only telephone calls, but also personal visits. Even if the chances of achieving something are slim, as Nehammer himself admitted. In some European countries such as Poland or the Baltic States, however, the trip to Russia is likely to be viewed critically.
Nehammer underscored that the war unleashed by Russia was "completely unacceptable" for Austria. "We are militarily neutral, but not when it comes to naming crimes and when it comes to going where injustice is actually happening." Austria supports the EU sanctions, emphasized the Chancellor, and there will be more give sanctions packages "with the aim of ending the war".
