Maryland lawmakers override Governor Larry Hogan's veto of abortion expansion

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan’s (R) veto of a measure to expand access to abortion in the state was overridden on Saturday by the General Assembly, which is controlled by Democrats.

The state will end a restriction that only physicians can provide abortions. The new law will enable nurse practitioners, nurse midwives and physician assistants to provide them with training. It creates an abortion care training program and requires $3.5 million in state funding annually. It also requires most insurance plans to cover abortions without cost.

Hogan, in his veto letter, wrote that the legislation “endangers the health and lives of women by allowing non-physicians to perform abortions.”

“In this context, it’s very important that we keep in mind that the strategies that this bill is using is ensuring that people can access the care that they need, when they need it, no matter what happens with the rest of the country — no matter what happens with the Supreme Court,” said Del. Ariana Kelly, a Democrat who was the lead sponsor of the bill, said.

Put issues on the ballot by popular vote?

That would be one avenue to try next.

All the laws we've been hearing about lately are ones that limit a woman's access to abortion. This was quite a contrast.

Got all worked up - just to find out it was done 'the right way!'

I was all set to lose faith in yet another bunch of citizens!

Sorry, Maryland!

You keep doing what America should be all about!

We allow nurse practitioners, midwives and PAs to perform much riskier procedures.

These people are still willing to do a good 99% of the evil policy shit that Trump endorses; they're just trying to put a "kinder & gentler" spin on it.

Hogan is a "reasonable " republican..
He still is a republican and believes some of that republican shit.

If he has presidential ambition he is all the more of a danger to our rights.

Look at the pieces of shit republicans he will have to pander to ,that should tell you all about his agenda.

Keep Maryland blue. Vote in 100 percent democrats .

And if they don't stop, at least they won't be in a position to practice medicine by legislation. Make the price for uninformed meddling in people's personal medical decisions so high nobody wants to pay it.

here were saying or implying they would vote for Hogan or be more than happy if he won instead of Ben Jealous because Hogan was 'basically a Dem', or a 'reasonable, harmless Republican' and also because........ Bernie/Justice Dems/Our Revolution all endorsed Jealous.

Of course they left out some of Jealous' other endorsements, like

Barack Obama
Joe Biden
Cory Booker
Kamala Harris
Ben Cardin
Elijah Cummings
Eric Holder

American Postal Workers Union
Communication Workers of America
Maryland State Educators Association
National Nurses United
Service Employees International Union

etc etc
