(Reuters) - The head of Russia's Orthodox Church called on people on Sunday to rally around the authorities as Moscow pursues its military intervention in Ukraine.
Patriarch Kirill has previously made statements defending Moscow's actions in Ukraine and views the war as a bulwark against a Western liberal culture that he considers decadent.
"Let the Lord help us unite during this difficult time for our Fatherland, including around the authorities," the Interfax news agency quoted Kirill, 75, as saying at a sermon in Moscow.
"May the authorities to be filled with responsibility for their people, humility and the readiness to serve them even if it costs them their life," added the patriarch, a close ally of President Vladimir Putin.

(81,543 posts)Forbes reported on February 20, 2009 that, "Kirill, who was the Metropolitan of Smolensk, succeeds Alexei II who died in December after 18 years as head of the Russian Church. According to material from the Soviet archives, Kirill was a KGB agent (as was Alexei). This means he was more than just an informer, of whom there were millions in the Soviet Union. He was an active officer of the organization. Neither Kirill nor Alexei ever acknowledged or apologized for their ties with the security agencies."[104] Further reporting from March 7, 2022 from The Guardian's Emma Graham-Harrison interviewed local Ukrainian's for their opinions about Kirill and the Russian Orthodox Church in Ukraine. The response was mostly a pessimistic view of Kirill and his motives towards Ukraine based on his past as a KGB agent:
Like many Ukrainians who no longer trust the Russian-linked churches in their country, Yuir is particularly wary of the Moscow Patriarch, Kirill, who according to material from Soviet archives was a government agent before the fall of the USSR. "Kirill is a KGB guy, and he supports all aggression against Ukraine," he said, but asked not to give his last name, worried like many in the town about community tensions about the church. "Hes a bastard, not a religious leader."[105]

(15,124 posts)our nation would be much more suited to work in a brothel than in a church or synagogue. When they deal with politicians, they give a whole new significance to "genuflecting".
Meanwhile, there are pastors and priests and nuns and rabbis you've never heard of and walking saints like Jimmy Carter who daily do their best to make the world a kinder better place.

(58,785 posts)secular authorities competed for power in European nations, undermining and loosening the authority of each other, which eventually lead to the Age of Reason and Renaissance, etc.
That didn't happen in Russia, though. Its people effectively served one inescapable authority in this life and the next. The czars were appointed by God to be the heads of the Orthodox church, and each reinforced the authority of the other over the people.
After the Russian revolution, the Orthodox Church supported the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics which succeeded the czars, the two iron authorities continuing to protect each other's continuation. Of course, today conservative church leaders are going to ally with the state.
