Monsoons during the season. Think a thunder storm blowing in with a dust storm for a skirt.

Got dust in my mouth one day in the summer. I spit on the sidewalk and watch the spit evaporate in about a minute and half. A lot of retirees and more of them in the winter.

Winters are nice though.

ASU is in Tempe as well.

It's become a hot spot for developers catering to wealthy retirees from Cali and elsewhere, with high rise condos going up next to campus. Tempe is more like parts of LA but with temps 110+ for 3-4 months and 90s for three more.

Very hot in summer, but is infinitely better than hot and humid to me.

Tempe is where ASU is so is a smaller college suberb of Phoenix. Chandler is just south of there and is a good area for schools and has had a lot of tech companies opening up offices there. Scottsdale is north of Tempe and is very nice but more expensive. Well, everywhere is more expensive. Phoenix rents overall are up over 30% over the past couple years I believe.

Big question is what are you looking for?

Tempe is a small, land locked Phx. suburb. As stated above, the best one in many peoples opinion.

Campus used to be somewhat open campus, President of ASU has a much different idea, (Koch funded piece of shit that I hope retires within a couple of years) build everywhere, give breaks to public/private endeavors, build a 'New American University.' In theory the idea is to provide a public secondary education to students who struggled to get into other Universities. (Bill Clinton was an early supporter) In reality Crow (the President) took a party school and turned it into an even bigger diploma mill while selling off University land to developers to fund his 'Vision.' (He shipped his own daughter off to UCLA) And the selling off portion, I am positive he funded a lot of kick backs to him personally.

As for the town, yes the new development is high rises and overwhelming, just off campus. With that there is about a mile strip of homes just west of campus that was built in the 50's, some really cool properties there. There is another strip just below (south) of campus that have some good streets with 50s homes that are going to be gold mines.

Now, if you are looking to retire, you might want to consider (as mentioned above) Tucson. A bit cooler than the PHX area, 500 to 1k more elevation which results in a much prettier desert bloom in the Spring.

Upside to Tempe, small town but a part of the Phx metro area, you want access to airports for travel, Tempe is good, you want desert beauty with a two hour drive to the big metro area, Tucson is a better fit. You want to be out of the desert, two hours north to Flagstaff is the spot.

I left right after college, and would never go back. Loved Tempe at the time, hated the ignorant RW mindset of many people there. And I moved to Orange County in the 80's. (Remember 'behind the Orange Curtain?') OC Repubs were/selfish repubs, PHX repubs are getting better, but still a have many ignorant/racist repubs.

There used to be a lot of hippies in Tempe, but that's changed, areas like Mill Avenue have been gentrified, as well as the "sin city" area.

Tempe had been land locked for decades due to surrounding cities, so they focused on development and infrastructure not city size. Over the years they have done a pretty good job, eg the tempe town lake developments.

It's pretty well located, with Scottsdale to the north, Phx to the west and Mesa to the east. Decent freeway access. Housing is fairly expensive.
