Andy Beshear: My Vetos

Last week, I vetoed several harmful bills passed by Republicans in the Kentucky legislature that would take us backwards and do wrong by our most vulnerable neighbors.

I ran for governor to build a welcoming, compassionate, future-focused Kentucky. I promised to always do right by all Kentuckians. And we’ve delivered, bringing record jobs and economic development. Unfortunately, while I'm focused on making progress for our Commonwealth's families, Republicans are working to pass legislation that will drag us down.

That’s why I vetoed a number of bills last week that would undercut much of our progress. They include legislation that would quite literally take food off the table for our poorest kids and seniors, a ban on reproductive freedom so extreme that it doesn’t include protections for victims of rape and incest, a mean-spirited attack on transgender kids and an attempt to take critical funding away from our public schools and give it to private, unaccountable, for-profit charters.

I know that Republicans are going to try to use these vetoes against me to score political points. But I ran for governor to build the kind of Commonwealth that attracts new jobs, where everyone feels welcome and where all Kentuckians can live and thrive.

Thanks for being with me in this important work,

Andy

He can veto all he wants but if the Republican legislature wants to enact a bill, they will.
