Link to tweet
EDIT: more info (thanks to DUer Pachamama for the link)
Demonstrations against Russian aggression in Ukraine continued for the third day in front of the Russian Embassy in Tallinn on Wednesday. This time, a few dozen people gathered in front of the embassy building on Pikk tänav to draw attention to Russian soldiers' rapes of women and children in Ukraine.
The message of the protest organizers was this: "Russian soldiers are raping and murdering innocent women and children in Ukraine. People who support this war also support war crimes, jarring murders to which they are accomplices. That is our message to the supporters of the Putin regime (in Russia, Estonia and everywhere)."

(1,454 posts)THIS is NOT part of war.
Rape is a war crime.
And your "Meh" attitude is beneath contempt.

(81,519 posts)Just guessing. Sounds like it could have been said aloud with a sarcastic tone of voice to dramatize how deplorable and indefensible and prehistoric the whole idea is.
Unfortunately, it seems clear that far too many take rape as anything from a small-time offense to an attitude of male "exceptionalism" - that it's just something they're entitled to assert, and to take.

(17,989 posts)Having Russia's image drug through the mud globally doesn't seem to phase them. I wish I knew what would phase them short of getting their collective asses kicked by NATO. The longer this goes on, the more I'm leaning towards no fly zone. In Ukrainian airspace, if it's Russian and it flies, it dies. Same goes for SAMs just inside Russia. You "paint" NATO aircraft, you die.

THAT is shameful.

(63,221 posts)simply because I pointed out how difficult it was not to despise men sometimes (even though I made it clear that I knew it was NOT ALL MEN), just because of the brutality that too many of them were capable of, and even more of them casually shrugged it off and weren't bothered by it. I totally agree with you.

(21,638 posts)give Ukraine the planes to enforce their own no fly zone.
paleotn
(17,989 posts)It's actually a very difficult and expensive thing to do effectively. It takes systems, training and tactics we and our allies have honed for decades. Plus very, very deep pockets. Operating a single jet interceptor costs $10K or more per flight hour and the meter will be running nearly 24/7 for months, maybe years. Ukraine is a big country, so it will require a whole lot of aircraft and experienced pilots Ukraine doesn't have. NATO could the whole thing up in 2 weeks tops. We're that good at it and bet dollars to donuts the planning for that option is already done.
wnylib
(21,638 posts)to be sent to Ukraine from Poland, with the US replacing Poland's planes? This was scrapped when Poland decided that the US should deliver the planes. There was concern about possible escalation if we provided Ukraine with the planes that they needed and knew how to operate.
paleotn
(17,989 posts)No fly, where the airspace is completely denied to Russian aircraft and SAMs, is a whole step above that. Ukraine wouldn't have been able to accomplish that even with the Polish MIGs. They were just to keep Ukraine's air force in the fight, denying air superiority to the Russians.

(16,887 posts)This is in the country of Estonia.
This is in front of the Russian Embassy in Estonia.
These women are standing there to protest against the actions of Russia raping.
These women put the bags over their heads and had their hands tied and smeared Fake Blood in the genital area to demonstrate the violent nature of how Ukrainian women are being raped, including vaginal and rectal tearing and internal damage, especially children and infants being raped.
I hope this helps you understand the image and what the Russians have done and what this demonstration is about.

(32,791 posts)They're standing in front of the Russian embassy in Tallinn and they're showing solidarity with the women (also children) of Ukraine who have been terrorized and raped.
Putin should care about this because he says he's going to invade Estonia next, and they are a NATO country.
(So are Lithuania and Latvia.)
yardwork
(61,712 posts)That tells us that this is taking place in Talinn, Estonia in front of the Russian embassy there.
The word "protest" in the tweet indicates it is a protest, presumably against Russia.
Russians are raping, torturing and murdering people in Ukraine. There are reports of children and infants being raped.
Details are horrific and readily available on the internet through google searches.

(10,749 posts)Brilliant.
Like American republicans, though, the Russian leadership have no shame. They, along with the Taliban, Isis, and others, are all cut from the same cloth - filled with contempt and hatred for "the other," whoever that "other" might be. We're beyond bigotry and bias and fear. This is about hate, pure and simple.

Woops.
