Russia threatens to move nukes to Baltic region if Finland, Sweden join NATO

BRUSSELS — Russia warned Finland and Sweden on Thursday that if they join NATO, Moscow will reinforce the Baltic Sea region, including by deploying nuclear weapons.

The threat came a day after Finnish officials suggested the country could request to join the 30-member military alliance within weeks and as Sweden mulled making a similar move.

Helsinki and Stockholm are officially nonaligned militarily, but they are reconsidering their status in light of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine — prompting escalating warnings from Russia.

Dmitry Medvedev, a Putin ally who serves as deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, said Thursday that NATO expansion would lead Russia to strengthen air, land and naval forces to “balance” military capability in the region.

What's new? Russia has always had nukes in Kaliningrad. Put your junk back in your pants and STFU.

Finland shares a long border with Russia and did this all once before with them with no desire have them visit in the future. I suspect Finland will apply for Nato Membership very shortly. Sweden is also likely to join in my opinion but may take a bit longer to get the paperwork in.

Putin has always gotten away with everything.

He installed half the US congress, a sitting US president, and owns the media with no consequences.

He still is fighting in Ukraine.

It remains to be seen if this time he has painful consequences which stop him.

The Allies should have cleared the decks (Poland, the Baltics, etc etc) when they could have, pre Soviet nukes. Stalin played them all. I do realise it would have meant continued war, but better then than what the future turned out to be.

His invasion of Ukraine will be remembered as one of the worst military blunders in modern history. He is no military mastermind . . . he's just a pint-sized thug who likes to kill and maim innocent people.

Sadly, somebody eventually has to call him out and remind him that we have nukes too.
I guess all things must come to an end at some point. I suspect that he and TFG had this conversation at some point. Remember when Trump said, "Why do we have nukes if we never use them?"
