Why the Committee should subpoena Donald Trump?

He is the target witness. He knows what happened. They need to get his side of the story.

More importantly, it is about maintaining the balance of powers within the three branches of government. If he was still president, there might be a question about interfering with his executive duties? But since he is now a private citizen, that is not a pertinent issue.

It would set a very bad precedent if Congress were to surrender its powers to all Presidents and former presidents in such a way. All branches are equal and it must be demonstrated in order to remain legitimate.

If the Congress cannot demonstrate that they represent the power of the people, then one might question the legitimacy of the Congress? It should not be debatable.
