The oblasts Ukrainian: область or regions of Ukraine, of which there are 24, are the main type of first-level administrative division of Ukraine, the other types being an autonomous republic (Crimea) and two cities with special status (Kyiv and Sevastopol).

They don't have the autonomy of a US state, with potential difference in laws, their own constitution etc.

The oblasts (Ukrainian: область or regions of Ukraine, of which there are 24, are the main type of first-level administrative division of Ukraine, the other types being an autonomous republic (Crimea) and two cities with special status (Kyiv and Sevastopol). Ukraine is a unitary state, thus the oblasts do not have much legal scope of competence other than that which is established in the Ukrainian Constitution and by law. Articles 140–146 of Chapter XI of the constitution deal directly with local authorities and their competency.

In population, they vary from about a million to 4 million: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oblasts_of_Ukraine

In area, most are above 20,000 sq. km - in the New Jersey to Maryland range: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Ukrainian_oblasts_and_territories_by_area

"Region" or "province" are typical translations.

Kill 'em all. Every last one of those Russian bastards that are still fighting, get Ukraine some bad ass fighter
jets and pilots, hit the Russian air and missile bases where they are launching attacks from, let the Russian
people know the truth about what is happening, and get back Crimea too.

Just looked @ a map.
That area is less then 100 miles due north of Mariupol. Would be nice if they could get there and see if they
can save anybody.

Very very small town and they would be surrounded by Russian occupied territory. Ukraine has lost control of pretty much that whole region.

We are talking a town of 9,000 before the war started. Given it’s location it’s population isn’t currently close to that. Most of this region is not controlled by a government. The Tweet makes it clear they targeted this town. I don’t see how that makes sense.

Just before this post I referenced that region as not being controlled by a government. While most media outlets are calling it Russian occupied like I did, it’s probably more accurate to say the region isn’t currently controlled by a government.

A Ukrainian counter-strike drives Russian forces completely out of Mariinka southwest of Donetsk.
The enemy had nearly 25% of the town under its control.

I did have family members in Kyiv for several years including during/after the Crimean takeover. But I'm finding myself glued to the maps and news now that democracy around the world is hanging by a thread.

Of course many red americans only know the geography of their front and back yards.
