(9,996 posts)Disney decided to just pick up and leave, which they could afford to do? What would FloriDUH do with a dead amusement park and no tax base in Orlando, which basically has nothing else to recommend it?

(490 posts)Don't think that will make up for it if Disney were to somehow bail out though.

(7,447 posts)property value of Disney World was estimated at 1.3 billion in 2011, gotta think it's closer to 2 billion now.
And I think that was just the property value, not the value of all the venues. The Star Wars exhibit alone cost 1 billion to build.
So let's assume it would cost them conservatively 5 billion dollars to pick and move and rebuild somewhere else. Cost of new rides, lost revenue, moving, tear down, etc. And that's probably conservative, it's probably more like 10 billion or even more as they'd have to buy the property somewhere else as well.
Their net worth is less than 100 billion so that's a pretty expensive hit to their bottom line.
And there aren't a lot of options on the eastern side of the US with good weather year round and easy access.
Someone mentioned Puerto Rico and that's certainly got some appeal, but Disney would have to spend massively to upgrade things like the power grid and other infrastructure, which we might say GOOD but they'd say expensive.

(7,447 posts)If not more is a ton of money even for Disney.
Plus they'd have to find a suitable location for weather, taxes, available land.
The odds of them doing it are infinitesimal.

(82,849 posts)If Disney's special district pays for its own services, is it entitled to a tax break for paying for stuff the Florida taxpayer would otherwise pay for? Does that tax break go away if the special district is revoked, and would Disney then be on the hook for a lot more in taxes due to Florida?
I have no idea, but I'm guessing that there's some kind of inducement for Disney to pay for its own services in the special district, rather than taking a double hit of paying its own way and paying taxes to the state.

(5,755 posts)This will be fun to watch. Not to mention Disney having to increase their prices, which are already astronomical.
Have fun with that Florida

(12,187 posts)I anticipate my property tax will double to make up for the shortfall left by this stupid, vindictive move by this motherfucker of a governor. He must be ousted in November.

(854 posts)Repub "cancel culture" is eventually realized by Floridian taxpayers, the thought that De Santis might be brought to heel by a mouse is a rather funny thought.

(9,145 posts)This has to be a first. Having the experience with Disneyland in Anaheim in 1955, Walt had a plan for more control.
"Walt Disney disliked the businesses that had sprung up around Disneyland and wanted more control over a larger area of land in the next project."

Emotions over the idea of merely discussing what homosexulaity is exposing some really shortsighted thinking on what education offers our children. They fear critical thinking so much. And education full stop. And they're willing to have a generation of lemmings, restricted from learning about real world issues. But the Floriduh kids paying attention to this are in for an education their politicians couldn't anticipate.
"A repeal of Disney's self-government status in Florida could leave local taxpayers with more than $1 billion in bond debt, according to tax officials and legislators."
Better response to the Wall Street Journal op-ed that Disney is in more trouble than Florida...
