(86,636 posts)Mercy, Mercy Me (The Ecology)
Woah, ah, mercy, mercy me
Ah, things ain't what they used to be (ain't what they used to be)
Where did all the blue skies go?
Poison is the wind that blows
From the north and south and east
Woah mercy, mercy me, yeah
Ah, things ain't what they used to be (ain't what they used to be)
Oil wasted on the ocean and upon our seas
Fish full of mercury
Oh Jesus, yeah, mercy, mercy me, ah
Ah, things ain't what they used to be (ain't what they used to be)
Radiation underground and in the sky
Animals and birds who live nearby are dying
Hey, mercy, mercy me, oh
Hey, things ain't what they used to be
What about this overcrowded land?
How much more abuse from man can she stand?
Oh, na, na, na
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Hey, ooh, woo

(15,540 posts)I think I ask this every year, but what are DU'ers doing this Earth Day to honor it? I always pick up trash in my park, not only on Earth Day, but if the weather permits I make it a point to be seen doing that on Earth Day. Today I'm planting more native plants in my own small yard. As I get older I find I can't do the bigger projects I used to do such as river cleanup, hauling tires and large debris out of the area around the river, etc.
If you can't do any of the physical things, maybe send a check or just join a local land conservancy.

(15,540 posts)But a lot of us were the same - ahead of our time. The conservatives took the word "hippie", turned it into "dirty hippies" and proceeded to denigrate everything that we stood for. Marvin Gaye was a threat to their old and outdated ideas.
The more things change, the more they stay the same. Or, everything old is new again.
But it's still true. War is not the answer.
