A Promotion for Shane Goldmacher in Politics

New York Times

I’m delighted to announce that Shane Goldmacher has been promoted to national political correspondent, a recognition of our growing reliance on his stellar reporting and writing to anchor big stories, break news and deliver incisive analysis of important political moments.

He steps into a storied leadership role most recently held by Jonathan Martin, who is now focusing on major political enterprise, and Alex Burns, who has moved on to the National desk. He will have a terrific partner in Lisa Lerer, who stepped into this position last year.

Shane’s stint on the campaign finance beat set a new bar for how to cover money in politics, culminating in his exposés last year of the depths of recurring-political-donation trickery, including Donald Trump’s exploitation of his supporters’ failure to read the fine print and both parties’ exploitation of the elderly. His stories led to multiple state investigations and calls to ban prechecked boxes in political donations.

His versatility, nimbleness and stamina were abundantly evident earlier this year when, in the space of just a few days, Shane co-wrote a takeout on Democrats leapfrogging past Republicans in the dark-money game, delivered a front-page story on the strains in Trump’s grip on the G.O.P., and then wrote a front-page analysis that helped readers make sense of what we’d just learned about the former president’s “single-minded pursuit of retaining power” and how it “underscored the fragility of the nation’s democratic systems.”
