Before enlisting, Fort Bragg soldier sprayed chemical at police during US Capitol riot

A 30-year-old Fort Bragg soldier admitted Friday to unleashing a chemical spray at police during the Jan. 6, 2021, assault on the U.S. Capitol, when he was still a civilian.

James Phillip Mault, formerly of Brockport, New York, pleaded guilty Friday to the charge of assaulting, resisting or impeding officers, according to a news release by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the District of Columbia.

Mault sprayed the chemical toward officers as he hung from the wood frame surrounding the arch of a tunnel that leads into the Capitol building, prosecutors said.

Mault is among at least 20 North Carolinians charged or under investigation in connection with the violence. The crowd aimed to interrupt the certification of President Joe Biden’s victory over Donald Trump.

Mault joined the Army in May, months after the assault, Fort Bragg spokesman Col. Joe Buccino told The Fayetteville Observer when Mault, who held the rank of specialist, was arrested at the base in October.

That’s going to be one of the more entertaining Chapter 14-5 discharge packets ever written.

1. Specialist Mault, I am considering throwing your sorry ass out of the United States Army under the provisions of AR 635-200, Chapter 14, due to your conviction in civil court.

2. You were convicted for violations of 18 USC 2381. Possible punishments for a conviction under this statute include life imprisonment, hanging, firing squad, beheading, boiling in oil, being tied to the back bumper of a car and dragged 40 miles down a dirt road, and being required to share a cell with Jared Kushner.

3. The Corps Commander sends a personal note that he’s going to request you be turned over to him so he can stake you to a fire ant mound.

4. It seems that after you did what you did, you joined the Army in an attempt to escape responsibility for your crimes. You are required to present yourself to the 82nd Airborne Division Commanding General at 0900 Monday, in Class A uniform with all authorized awards and decorations so that you can explain just what the fuck is wrong with you.
